Coco Gauff Battles Wimbledon Final Today – What’s At Stake

Coco Gauff Falls at Wimbledon Semifinal

Florida’s rising star Coco Gauff saw her bid for a third major title end on July 9 at Wimbledon when she was outplayed by Karolina Muchova in a tightly contested semifinal at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The 22‑year‑old from Delray Beach could not convert multiple match points and fell 6‑4, 5‑7, 6‑10 after a 10‑point tiebreak. It marks her worst performance at a major this year after earlier first‑round exits in two of the past three Wimbledon events.

Gauff’s Comeback Catching Fire

After dropping the opening set, Gauff rallied to take the second frame, mirroring her earlier victories over Belinda Bencic and Jessica Pegula. The match went to a final tiebreak at 6‑6, where Muchova’s early lead and a dramatic cramp in the London heat gave her the edge. Gauff tied it at 8‑8, prompting her mother Candi Gauff to pump her fist on camera, but a net drop and a 35th unforced error sealed the defeat.

Key Match Turning Points

Muchova gained control early in the 10‑point tiebreak and saved a crucial point as Gauff mounted a comeback. When Gauff served for the match, a drop shot skittered into the net, leading to Muchova’s expertly placed lob and a slip at the net. The world No. 9 capitalized on the second chance, leaving Gauff unable to close out the rally.

Looking Ahead

This loss ends Gauff’s chances to add to her 2023 U.S. Open and 2025 French Open titles, leaving her as the highest seed after top contenders Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina and defending champion Iga Swiatek were eliminated earlier. After bursting onto the scene in 2019 at age 15 with a Round of 16 run, Gauff has struggled on grass, missing the second round in two of the last three years.

Muchova will face either No. 12 Linda Noskova or No. 13 Marta Kostyuk in the championship match, both seeking their first major final appearance.
