Mitch Barnhart’s Kentucky Settlement Totals $3.2 Million

Retirement Terms and Payment Schedule

Former Kentucky Wildcats athletics director Mitch Barnhart officially retired on June 30, receiving a $3.2 million severance package. The sum will be distributed over several years, with payments scheduled for 2027, 2028, and two installments in 2029. Each of the first three payouts is set at $760,000, while the final payment in 2029 will be slightly higher at $780,000. These amounts come from private funds, according to UK spokesman Jay Blanton.

Funding Source and Reduced Benefits

The settlement is funded through private resources rather than university operating budgets. This arrangement marks a reduction of roughly $700,000 compared to Barnhart’s previously planned compensation. Unlike a typical AD contract, the package excludes perks such as complimentary tickets, courtesy vehicles, and other benefits. The lower overall figure reflects a negotiated adjustment to the original agreement.

New Role and Compensation

Barnhart will now serve as a part‑time employee of the university, reporting directly to President Eli Capilouto. His duties include fundraising and any other tasks assigned by the administration. In exchange for this role, he will receive a $40,000 annual salary plus continued eligibility for insurance benefits. Notably, the $40,000 salary is counted as part of the broader $3.2 million settlement.

Official Signing

The agreement was finalized on Barnhart’s last day in Lexington, with both he and President Capilouto signing the documents. This marked the official end of his tenure as athletics director after many years with the Kentucky Wildcats program. The signing ceremony capped a transition that had been in motion throughout the spring and early summer. The formalities complete a departure that will be remembered for its substantial financial package.
