Collegiate golfers normally dominate the Utah Men’s State Amateur, and this year is no different. After Thursday’s two rounds, seven players who represent colleges have secured spots in Friday’s quarterfinal field. The event continues Saturday with a 36‑hole final that will crown a new champion.

Quarterfinal Matchups and Storylines

Defending champion Bowen Mauss returns for Arizona State and enters the quarterfinals on a strong winning streak. Mauss posted a lopsided 6 & 5 victory over Brock Sivulich in the morning session and followed with a 3 & 2 win against Aidan Thain in the afternoon. He will face Layton’s David Liechty, a transfer from Utah Tech to BYU, who edged Steele DeWald 2 & 1 after erasing a 1‑up lead through 12 holes.

Two friends from Lehi, Carter Frisby and KJ Ofahengaue, will meet in the early draw. Frisby, a senior at the University of Idaho, held off Ty Brady on the final hole, while Ofahengaue, a junior at Utah Valley, dispatched Andrew Cottle 2 & 1. Their local rivalry adds a personal spotlight to Friday’s schedule.

An 18‑year‑old surprise awaits in the third pair as Kanyon DeRyke takes on Noah Moody. DeRyke, a Brigham City native bound for Providence College in Montana, toppled Austin Shelley 2 & 1, ending the former Skyline High golfer’s run at BYU. Moody, representing Utah State, survived Ammon Allred by a single stroke.

The final quarterfinal pits Cameron Crawford against Jackson Mauss. Crawford, 38 and a Dixie State alum who played college golf 16 years ago, rallied to defeat Angus Klintworth on the 19th hole and recently captured the Art City Amateur. Jackson Mauss of BYU advanced past former champion Cole Ogden and Utah’s Brandon Robison to set up the morning showdown.
