United Close in on Chelsea Midfielder Andrey Santos
Santos’ Path to Chelsea
The Brazilian midfielder moved from Vasco da Gama to Chelsea in January 2023. He then spent further loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg, where his performances earned him a place in the senior squad. Santos shone for the French club, catching the eye of the Blues’ coaching staff.
His time at Chelsea culminated in a solid debut season, delivering three goals and four assists across 43 matches, 25 of which were starts. Despite the challenging campaign for the London side, Santos stood out as one of their few bright spots. The 22‑year‑old is already regarded as a potential heir to Casemiro in Brazil’s national setup.
Scholes Questions the Signing
United legend Paul Scholes expressed doubt that the arrival would stir much excitement among fans. He questioned why Chelsea would sell a young talent like Santos, especially with limited alternatives in the market. Scholes highlighted other midfielders who are still on the board: Sandro Tonali heading to Tottenham and Bruno Guimaraes reportedly targeting Arsenal.
He suggested Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as a possible alternative, noting the player’s quality and availability at the right price. Scholes also indicated that Michael Carrick may have limited influence, with top‑level officials making the final call. The former Red Devil warned that United need immediate impact, given the upcoming Champions League schedule.
United’s Midfield Maneuvering
Having missed out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, United’s search narrowed after Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni signaled he would stay. The club reportedly turned attention to Santos after earlier links with Atalanta’s Ederson fell short of a deal. The Brazilian’s combination of close control, tactical awareness, and work rate is seen as a useful addition.
Scholes also pointed out that United’s directors might view Santos as a sell‑on asset, but stressed that the club’s immediate needs outweigh long‑term speculation. With three games a week looming, United cannot afford a squad that lacks quality in the engine room. The final decision rests with those at the top of the club hierarchy.
Looking Ahead
Santos is still developing, and his progression could turn out to be a smart investment for United in the coming seasons. The Brazilian’s age and potential for growth make him an intriguing prospect for a side aiming to fill Casemiro’s void. If he hits the expected milestones, the club could see a valuable midfield asset bloom under Ralf Rangnick’s system.
