Conor McGregor On Dustin Poirier’s Troubled Path

McGregor Opens Up on Smash Cast

During a recent episode of Smash Cast, the UFC icon sat down with Chael Sonnen and Ian Parker. He touched on his potential return to welterweight, a possible rematch with Floyd Mayweather and the fate of former sparring partners. The conversation took a turn when Poirier’s recent legal trouble was broached.

Poirier’s Public Drunkenness Arrest

After retiring, Poirier has been candid about the difficulties of life outside the cage. In late June, video surfaced of him heavily intoxicated at Atlanta’s Hartsfield‑Jackson Airport, leading to a misdemeanor arrest for public drunkenness. The incident has sparked concern among fans and former rivals.

McGregor’s Warning to the Former Opponent

When Sonnen asked the Irish star what he would tell Poirier, McGregor responded with a reflection on karma. “Karma is a mirror,” he said. “It’s not good to see. If I was to say something to him, I would say: take this with absolute seriousness. Do not engage with people. ‘Oh,’ there’s people [that would say], ‘it was funny, I like him more,’ and you see [them] start laughing about it and maybe you wonder, ‘maybe it wasn’t so bad. Maybe I’ll keep going.’ And then the next one’s worse, and then you slip deeper and deeper.”

He then turned the spotlight onto Poirier’s post‑retirement choices, referencing an admission about performance‑enhancing drugs. “For him to retire and go on steroids for no reason, I found that stupid,” McGregor noted. He added that Poirier’s body seemed unchanged, which set off alarm bells for him. The fighter also mentioned seeing Poirier blame his father, stressing that you have to take accountability as a man.

Despite the sharp critique, the Notorious ended on a hopeful note. “It’s not my business,” he said, “and for the sake of his family and children, and his new child born, I hope he comes right.”

Context and Legacy

Poirier, a three‑time opponent who lost the trilogy in 2021, has been quiet since the airport episode. The UFC community watches to see whether he will address the legal issues and the surrounding speculation. McGregor’s remarks underscore a recurring theme in combat sports: the pressure to adapt after leaving the sport and the consequences of fading focus.
