Why Smart Fits Houston’s Defensive Identity

Houston has built a reputation for hard‑nosed defense during Ime Udoka’s three‑year tenure. Smart spent a season with Udoka in Boston and earned the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, a tribute to his versatility. At 6‑foot‑3, the guard combines physical play with the ability to guard multiple positions, making him a good fit for the Rockets’ switching scheme.

During Friday’s summer league game, general manager Rafael Stone spoke highly of the acquisition. He described Smart as “very exciting” and said the player “feels like a Rocket.” Stone praised the guard’s defensive range, noting he can guard 5s without hesitation and called his playmaking skills underrated.

Smart’s Defensive Impact and Resume

Last season Smart led the Lakers in on‑off differential with a +9.6 mark, and analysts graded his defense very favorably. During the 2026 playoffs he posted 12.9 points, 5.1 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game while hitting 34 percent from three‑point range. Those numbers helped Los Angeles upset Houston in the first round of the Western Conference.

Rockets’ Rotation and Starting Plans

Assuming health, Houston will likely start Fred VanVleet, Kevin Durant, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Sengun next season. Smart will join Tari Eason, Reed Sheppard, Steven Adams and newly acquired shooter Bogdan Bogdanović as key reserves. The mix provides depth at guard and adds veteran presence to a youthful core.

The two‑year contract is worth roughly $13 million, with a player option for the second year. This deal gives Houston flexibility while securing a perimeter defender who can also contribute on offense.
