Linfield FC Wants Unconditional Apology from Alliance
Badge Appears on Party’s Social Media Graphic
The Alliance Party shared a graphic that incorporated Linfield FC’s crest and the phrase “striking the right balance” while promoting legislation intended to address abusive flags. The post was intended to illustrate legitimate cultural expression, according to the party, but many viewed it as inappropriate. The image was later removed to avoid any misrepresentation, whether accidental or deliberate.
Linfield Calls for Full Apology
Linfield issued a statement expressing that it was “shocked and extremely disappointed” to see its badge used in a political message linked to abusive flags. After early discussions with party representatives, the club secured the deletion of the offending post, yet deemed the subsequent apology from the MLA “conditional” and insufficient. The club now demands “full and unconditional apologies” from the Alliance Party and the individuals responsible.
South Belfast MLA Paula Bradshaw, who is proposing the bill, apologized “for any offence caused,” a gesture that Linfield viewed as merely conditional. Bradshaw later clarified that flags celebrating sports teams would generally be allowed under her proposed law, suggesting the graphic missed its intended focus. She stood by the apology and reiterated the bill’s purpose to regulate flag displays across Northern Ireland.
Political Reactions Spark Debate
DUP leader Gavin Robinson took to social media, drawing a line from a previous shirt controversy to the flag incident and labeling the situation “embarrassing.” He questioned why the Alliance Party seemed to single out Linfield, implying a pattern of intolerance. Alliance leader Naomi Long responded sharply, asking why the club’s flag was assumed to represent negativity and suggesting that the criticism exposed bias.
Traditional Unionist Voice MLA Timothy Gaston weighed in, stating that having to apologize for a campaign promoting a proposed law likely indicated flawed legislation. He argued that the need for an apology reflected poorly on the bill’s intent and effectiveness. His comments added a further layer to the growing political debate.
