Raegan Pebley Fired As L.A. Sparks GM After Losing Streak

Los Angeles Sparks Part Ways With GM Raegan Pebley

New Leadership for the Sparks

The franchise announced Sunday that it has separated from general manager Raegan Pebley. Pebley assumed the role in January 2024 after more than two decades coaching women’s college basketball. The Sparks compiled a 39‑66 record during her brief tenure. Assistant general managers Zack Knowlton and Nate Nielsen, both hired by the Sparks during the 2026 offseason following extensive NBA front‑office experience, will fill the vacancy. Managing partner and governor Eric Holoman released a statement praising Pebley’s leadership and vowing to honor her contributions.

Assessing Pebley’s Impact

Pebley came into the job aiming to restore a culture of success after three straight seasons without playoff appearance. The Sparks are still searching for their first postseason berth since 2020 and currently have only one lottery‑selected player—Cameron Brink—from that stretch to show for it. Despite aggressive roster moves, expectations built around the signing of former champion and MVP Nneka Ogwumike have not translated into a top‑four position; the team sits ninth in the league’s standings roughly halfway through the 2026 season.

Key Trades During Her Tenure

Early in the 2024 season, L.A. swapped the No. 8 overall pick for Julie Allemand and Li Yueru with Chicago. The Sparks finished that year 8‑32, Allemand went unprotected in the 2026 expansion draft, and Yueru later became part of the Kelsey Plum deal. In a three‑team transaction, the Sparks acquired two‑time WNBA champion Kelsey Plum while sending the No. 2 pick—ultimately used on Dominique Malonga—to Seattle. Malonga is averaging 15.8 points and 7.5 rebounds and earned a reserve spot on the upcoming All‑Star roster.

Further proof of a “win‑now” strategy emerged when Pebley dealt Rickea Jackson, the fourth overall pick in the 2024 draft, to the Chicago Sky for two‑time All‑Star Ariel Atkins. Atkins is posting 8.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game in 19 appearances for Los Angeles.

Coaching Change and Continuity

Pebley also steered the hiring of Lynne Roberts after former head coach Curt Miller was dismissed in September 2024. Miller and Pebley had previously worked together on the Colorado State staff from 1999 to 2001. Roberts enters the season with a 31‑34 record as the Sparks’ head coach and addressed the recent shake‑up with a focus on moving forward.

Current Situation and Outlook

The Sparks have notched two of their best wins of the 2026 campaign, both at home against the Indiana Fever—missing Aliyah Boston—and the lottery‑bound Chicago Sky. Pebley was actively contacting other clubs ahead of the August 2 trade deadline, and the expiring contract of Plum could become a key asset for the franchise if it decides not to retain her in free agency. The organization’s next steps will likely revolve around balancing immediate competitiveness with longer‑term roster construction.
