Zack Wheeler Rejects Late All-Star Invitation
Zack Wheeler made it clear he will not be joining the National League roster for this Tuesday’s All-Star Game. The Phillies ace turned down a last‑minute call from Major League Baseball after feeling disrespected by an earlier omission. “They disrespected me, so I’m not going to participate,” Wheeler told reporters, per Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic.
Wheeler’s Dominant Numbers This Season
Despite the snub, Wheeler’s 2026 campaign reads like a resume for an elite pitcher. In 14 starts he posts a 2.28 ERA and a career‑low 0.908 WHIP while striking out 98 batters and walking only 20 in 87 innings. His 9‑1 win‑loss record and the low ERA would also mark new career bests if he keeps it up for a full year.
Those numbers come after a massive comeback from thoracic outlet decompression surgery that required the removal of a rib. The surgery curtailed his 2025 campaign and his chances at the NL Cy Young award, but Wheeler returned this year looking stronger than ever. At 36, he says he came back “as who I was or even better.”
The Disrespectful Snub
Wheeler’s frustration boiled over earlier this month when he was left off the initial NL roster. “It pisses me off,” he said after a 14‑strikeout win over the Cincinnati Reds, adding, “Maybe if I wasn’t necessarily right in [the All-Star mix], I wouldn’t be saying this. But I feel like I’ve earned it.”
His teammate Cristopher Sánchez will take the mound for the NL in front of a home crowd at Citizens Bank Park, the very park where Wheeler grew up rooting. The irony of missing his own stadium game added fuel to his disappointment.
MLB Names Replacement Pitchers
In response to Wheeler’s rejection, MLB filled the NL’s pitching slot with two emerging talents. Foster Griffin of the Washington Nationals and Justin Wrobleski of the Los Angeles Dodgers were added to the roster. Both pitchers bring fresh exposure to their clubs while Wheeler stays home.
The timing of the replacements also highlights how quickly All-Star rosters can shift after the initial vote.
What This Means for the Phillies
Wheeler’s decision removes a potential boost to the NL lineup but also underscores his focus on health and personal pride. The Phillies will still have a solid presence via Sánchez, who gets the start on his home field. Fans can expect Wheeler to channel his energy into the regular season rather than the symbolic event.
His outspoken stance may spark conversation about the All-Star selection process, especially for veterans coming off major injuries. Whether voters reconsider next year remains to be seen.
The episode adds a new footnote to Wheeler’s ongoing quest for recognition and sets the stage for his Phillies’ run in the second half of the season.
