Lance Pecht Shatters Grappler Pullup Record on 43rd Birthday
A Unique Birthday Challenge
Most celebrants spend July 12 unwinding by a river with a cold drink, but Lance Pecht chose a different way to mark his 43rd year. The former Whitworth University basketball player stepped into Body Unlimited Fitness early Sunday morning, determined to test the limits of his strength. “I worked hard for 43 years of life,” he said, “Why am I not the best in the world at anything?” The gym’s owner, Natalie Joseph, had been coaching him for weeks, believing the feat would be a fitting milestone.
How Grappler Pullups Work
The move requires two golf‑ or lacrosse‑sized balls positioned at the edge of a pull‑up bar, forcing the wrists into extreme flexion while the forearms generate the upward motion. The exercise stresses the hands, wrists, forearms, lats, back, and chest all at once. Pecht, who weighs 235 pounds at 6‑foot‑4, must lift his entire body weight over the bar, making the already tough motion even more demanding. Joseph explained that lighter athletes have an advantage not only in weight but also in shorter limb length, which reduces the distance traveled.
Training Regimen at Body Unlimited
Joseph and Pecht exchanged technique ideas and monitored his form as he experimented with different grips and body positions. They trained together, adjusting their approach based on each session’s results. In the hour before the attempt, Pecht paced the gym to early‑2000s rap and rock while setting up cameras and computers. Two front‑angle and side‑angle cameras, along with two computers—one for counting reps and another for timing—were positioned to meet Guinness requirements. Local fitness professionals and a police officer also served as witnesses, ensuring the count was accurate.
Breaking the World Mark
As the minute began, Pecht’s hands gripping the balls, the gym fell silent. He completed 31 grappler pull‑ups, surpassing the previous benchmark of 29 set by Elias Benz in Switzerland. The crowd erupted in applause as his final rep came home. Though the attempt was successful, the record is not yet official; Pecht must submit video evidence and signed witness forms, a process that can take up to 12 weeks. He admitted feeling nervous before the effort, fearing “it would be kind of embarrassing to have some build‑up for one minute and then not be able to follow through.”
Future Goals Beyond the Birthday
After the celebration, Pecht plans to enjoy food and drinks, then shift focus to new challenges. “I’ll eat and drink good tonight,” he said, “And then next week, I’ll start looking at other world records.” The owner of Body Unlimited praised his dedication, noting that the upcoming certification could soon make his latest achievement official. Regardless of the outcome, the record‑breaking effort proved that a birthday can be a launchpad for extraordinary feats.
