Thomas Brown’s Frustrating Interview Journey

Patriots passing game coordinator and tight ends coach Thomas Brown is among the many Black assistants who have interviewed for head‑coaching jobs without success. The 40‑year‑old told Mike Reiss of ESPN that the repeated interviews have taken an emotional toll. In his view, the league’s rhetoric about hiring the most qualified candidates rings hollow when the outcome is “never a Black coach,” a fact he finds deeply frustrating. Brown also challenged the idea that there are few Black candidates, pointing to his own experience with “great communicators, great connectors of people” at every level.

A Long Coaching Tenure With Brief Spotlight

Before moving to the staff, Brown was a sixth‑round pick of the Falcons in 2008 after a standout college running back career. His playing days lasted three seasons, after which he transitioned into coaching. Over the past 15 years, he has worked his way up the hierarchy, earning a five‑game interim stint with the Bears in 2024. That brief head‑coach assignment marked a milestone, yet it did not translate into a permanent role.

Current Black Head Coaches in the NFL

Despite the recent hires, the NFL still fields three Black head coaches heading into the new season. Todd Bowles leads the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay, while DeMeco Ryans directs the Texans in Houston. Aaron Glenn is at the helm of the Jets in New York, providing the remaining visibility for Black leadership in the league.
