Xavier Holmes Joins Patriots as Edge Depth Plan
Patriots Target Edge Depth With Holmes
The New England Patriots entered the 2025 offseason looking to bolster their edge group after a solid season of production from the rebuilt units. General manager Bill O’Brien and the coaching staff aimed to add two high‑profile arms, veteran free agent Dre’Mont Jones and second‑round pick Gabe Jacas, while also scouting for hidden gems. One of those hidden gems materialized at rookie minicamp, where the 24‑year‑old defensive end caught the eye of the organization.
The newcomer, Xavier Holmes, is a 6‑foot‑2¼, 252‑pound defender with a 4.76‑second 40‑yard dash and a 4.96 Relative Athletic Score. He played four seasons at Maine, earning second‑team All‑CAA honors before transferring to James Madison for a final collegiate campaign. At Maine he posted 123 tackles, 8.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, forced recoveries, and an interception in 25 games, starting 23 of them.
Holmes’s college résumé includes a strong sophomore‑junior surge, a transfer to the FBS level, and a breakout 2025 season with the Dukes. He finished that year with 37 quarterback pressures—second in the Sun Belt Conference—including a career‑high 2.5 sacks in the Sun Belt Championship. His season also featured an interception, a blocked punt, and six sacks in total, helping James Madison capture its first SBC title.
What the Patriots See in Holmes
Coaches praise Holmes for his high motor and effort, traits that allow him to stay engaged even when initially stalled. He combines decent length with solid power, making him a viable situational pass rusher rather than a pure speed‑based edge. However, scouts note his hands can be erratic and his bend around the tackle is limited, which may cap his upside at the rotational level.
In 2025 Holmes appeared in 14 games, logging 430 defensive snaps and 49 special‑team exposures. He recorded 30 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 37 pressures (6 sacks, 5 hits, 24 hurries), and one forced recovery. His brief snaps on offense gave up three catches for 43 yards and an interception, while a blocked punt highlighted his special‑team versatility.
The Patriots signed Holmes to a three‑year, $885,000 base‑salary deal for 2026, keeping him off the top‑51 cap for now. He competes for a roster spot against Harold Landry, Dre’Mont Jones, Gabe Jacas, Elijah Ponder, Bradyn Swinson, Jesse Luketa, and Quintayvious Hutchins. Outside linebackers coach Mike Smith offered praise, yet Holmes remains closer to the practice‑squad threshold than the 53‑man roster.
Holmes’s path mirrors that of fellow undrafted rookie Elijah Ponder, who earned a roster spot through camp play. If Holmes can improve his hand usage and run‑stopping technique, he could ride the wave of defensive depth needs and earn a backup role. Otherwise, the practice squad likely remains his most realistic landing spot as the preseason unfolds.
