Celtics’ Summer Rotation

The Boston Celtics opened their Summer League slate with a rotation heavy on experienced talent. Guard Hugo Gonzalez, center Amari Williams and guard John Tonje all logged substantial minutes, leading Boston to a 2‑0 record while they were in the lineup. The staff decided to rest Gonzalez and Williams for the Monday night matchup against the Atlanta Hawks, opting instead for a more youthful lineup. The change backfired as the Celtics fell behind by as many as 29 points en route to a 102‑90 defeat.

Tonje’s Downward Shift

Even with the senior players sidelined, John Tonje saw court time but managed only five points in 20 minutes. This dip was notable because Tonje entered the game as the team’s leading Summer League scorer. The move reflected the common late‑season trend of giving unproven players more exposure as the summer series progresses.

Rookie Impact for Boston

Boston still found scoring help from its draft picks. Forward Chris Cenac Jr., selected 27th overall in the 2026 draft, posted 16 points, five rebounds and four blocks. Fellow rookie Dillon Mitchell, taken in the second round, contributed 11 points, four rebounds and two assists while shooting 50 percent from the field and finding success from beyond the arc. Their play hinted at the potential depth the Celtics hope to build for the upcoming season.

Hawks’ Offensive Surge

Atlanta’s guard Kobe Johnson, younger brother of Hawks star Jalen Johnson, paced the Hawks with a game‑high 30 points off the bench. Boston never eclipsed 30 points in any single quarter, underscoring the defensive challenges the Celtics face when their veteran cores sit. The Hawks’ balanced attack and Johnson’s scoring burst proved too much for the youthful Celtics lineup.

Next Steps for the Celtics

The Celtics return to action on Wednesday, facing the Sacramento Kings in Las Vegas. After that contest, Boston will play another game against a yet‑to‑be‑determined opponent. These upcoming matches will offer further insight into how the rookies and development players fit into Boston’s long‑term plans.
