Joe Smith, IU Radio Legend, Dies at 78
Decades of Hoosier Broadcasting
Joe Smith, a long‑time voice for Indiana University sports, passed away Monday at the age of 78 in Bloomington. The broadcaster’s station, 98.7 The Zone, confirmed his death and praised his dedication to listeners. In a statement, the station highlighted how Smith “touched people in the way great broadcasters do, by being there again and again and again,” noting his consistent professionalism and enthusiasm.
Milestone Career in College Sports
Smith spent four decades as part of the Indiana Athletics in‑house radio team, joining the broadcast crew in 1983 after earlier work in television. He worked side‑by‑side with Hall‑of‑Fame play‑by‑play announcer Don Fischer, handling pregame, halftime and postgame duties for both football and men’s basketball. Before that, from 1978 to 1982 he managed IU’s TV warmup shows and hosted several coaches’ programs over three separate decades.
Awards and Hall of Fame Honors
Recognition for his work included the Indiana Sportscaster of the Year award in 1998 and induction into the state’s Sportswriters/Sportscasters Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2021 he became a member of the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame, and he had earlier received the J.W. Bill Orwig Medal in 2004 for distinguished service to the university. A Bicentennial Medal followed in 2020 from then‑President Michael McRobbie, and he formally retired from the IU Radio Network in 2022, though he remained on the air until his death.
Community Impact and Legacy
Beyond college football and basketball, Smith was a fixture in the local high‑school sports scene, broadcasting games for Bloomington‑area schools for many years. He also served as sports director at WGCL‑AM 1370, the station now known as 98.7 The Zone, reinforcing his role as a community hub for sports news. His career left a lasting imprint on both IU and the broader Bloomington sports landscape, inspiring countless listeners and colleagues.
