Stefon Diggs Can’t Earn Dallas WR2 Spot
Patriots Cut Diggs, Setting Stage for WR Shake‑up
The New England Patriots released Stefon Diggs in a cap‑saving move that came right after the Super Bowl LX loss to Seattle. The move left Diggs unsigned as training camps approached, effectively ending his tenure with the franchise. Diggs’ final season with New England included just three catches in the championship game, prompting the Patriots to overhaul the wide‑receiver room for young quarterback Drake Maye.
Diggs took to the league to argue that he remains the elite option for any team’s second receiver, declaring nobody can “name a better No. 2 receiver than him.” To back up his claim, he pointed to his age‑32 campaign with the Patriots: 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, ranking as New England’s clear top target.
Dallas’ Current WR Depth Challenges Diggs’ Assertion
When the Dallas Cowboys assess their receiving corps, Diggs would not even make the top two spots. CeeDee Lamb remains the unquestioned alpha, despite missing three games last season and still managing to post 1,077 receiving yards. Meanwhile, George Pickens exploded to career highs with 93 receptions, 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns—earning his first Pro Bowl.
Pickens is currently on the franchise tag while sitting out training camp due to a contract standoff, a situation that highlights his rising value compared to Diggs’ recent production. The Cowboys’ depth chart, featuring Lamb and Pickens, simply leaves no room for Diggs to claim a second‑receiver role.
Where Diggs Might Still Fit
Despite the stiff competition in Dallas, Diggs remains linked to several teams that could use an experienced No. 2 option, including the Los Angeles Chargers, New York Giants, Washington Commanders and even a potential reunion with the Buffalo Bills. Each of those clubs is scouting for a reliable target to complement their existing stars.
As training camps draw near, Diggs will likely have to prove his claim in a more crowded market, where his age and the current depth of contenders like Dallas pose significant hurdles.
