Jordan Walker Wins Home Run Derby, Double His Salary
Jordan Walker made MLB history Saturday, becoming the first St. Louis Cardinals player to capture the Home Run Derby and the youngest winner in the contest’s modern era. The 24‑year‑old outfielder hit 11 home runs in 15 swings, including the first off the special “magenta ball” used for the final round’s swings. Walker out‑dueled Kyle Schwarber 12‑11 at Citizens Bank Ballpark to secure the title.
The derby victory came with a substantial payday. Walker received a $1 million bonus for his performance, eclipsing his entire 2026 salary of $799,400. In a single game, his earnings are now more than double what he would normally make for a full season. “I can’t even describe how it means to win it,” Walker said, reflecting on the pressure and the fun he felt throughout the competition.

When the Philadelphia crowd turned hostile, cheering for Schwarber and Bryce Harper, Walker stayed focused and delivered. The boos from the Phillies faithful added intensity, but the young star said he embraced the challenge. “My thought was Philly is brutal,” Walker admitted, “but I think it’s pretty special because they love their players, and that’s what you want from where you play.” His composure in a tough environment highlighted his growth beyond just the power display.
Walker’s week-long surge not only cemented his place among derby legends but also reshaped his financial outlook for the upcoming season. The extra $200,600 in earnings gives him a cushion that many veteran players envy. As he looks ahead, the experience of thriving under pressure will likely serve as a confidence booster for the stretch run.
