Grayson Fox: Wheelchair Tennis Star and Engineering Dream
From USTA Camp to National Champion
ABC13 first noticed Grayson Fox at a USTA camp for teenage wheelchair tennis players. Although older than most, Fox proved to be a top competitor and a natural mentor, constantly encouraging younger athletes to enjoy the sport. He said, “I love seeing the progression,” and added, “It’s amazing what they can do.”
Life‑Changing Accident and Recovery
A car crash left Fox with a T4 spinal injury, a blow that reshaped his life. The accident happened when “my friend slipped on black ice and the car went into a tree sideways, crushed me and my friend, well me,” he explained. After the injury he felt lost until his mother suggested wheelchair lacrosse, a step that eventually led him to wheelchair tennis.
Tournament Revelation and Passion
An early rough start turned into a breakthrough moment at a tournament where players from across the country gathered. Witnessing “all these people coming from everywhere playing a sport having a good time with smiles on their faces” made Fox realize the sport’s community spirit. That experience sparked a lasting passion that turned a former high‑school football, wrestler and track athlete into a committed wheelchair tennis player.
Rising Star at UH
Today Fox is the No. 1 player on the University of Houston wheelchair tennis team, which captured the 2024 national title. He trains daily with teammates but also logs countless hours on his own, competing in external tournaments with the ambition of ranking among the world’s best. His T4 spinal injury puts him at a physical disadvantage, making his drive all the more impressive.
Engineering Dreams and Future Goals
Alongside athletics, Fox excels in the classroom as a mechanical‑engineering major, dreaming of working with a Formula 1 racing team. He often reflects that “I could still ravel the world” and share his story of overcoming adversity. His blend of technical curiosity and athletic determination positions him as a unique role model in both sports and STEM fields.
