Thomas Meunier Signs Two-Year Deal with Sunderland
New Chapter for Veteran Defender
Thomas Meunier, a 34‑year‑old Belgian defender, completed his move to Premier League side Sunderland on a free transfer, signing a two‑year contract. “I am hugely excited and honoured to join Sunderland,” he said in a statement on the club’s website. He added, “I’m very happy to be here and to begin this new chapter in my career,” while emphasizing the league’s competitive nature and the club’s ambition.
Proven Leader for the Black Cats
Sunderland’s director of football, Florent Ghisolfi, described Meunier as a player who “brings a wealth of experience, leadership and professionalism.” Ghisolfi continued, “Thomas is a player who understands what it takes to compete for success, and we’re confident his mentality and character will have a positive influence on the squad.” He also said, “We believe he’ll make an important contribution on and off the pitch, and we’re excited to see him begin this new chapter with us.” “It feels like a great fit.”
International Heritage and Club Success
Meunier is part of Belgium’s “golden generation” and earned 83 caps for the national side, culminating in a World Cup quarter‑final exit to Spain. The veteran has plied his trade across Europe, enjoying top‑level spells in Belgium, Germany, Turkey and France. Between 2016 and 2020 he lifted three Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint‑Germain before moving to Lille.
What This Means for Sunderland
When Meunier met Sunderland officials he was struck by the club’s forward‑looking project and its Europa League ambitions. “The Premier League is one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world, and it’s a challenge I’ve wanted to experience,” he explained. He also noted, “Competing in Europe (the Europa League) was also a big factor in my decision because, as a player, you always want to test yourself against the best teams and compete for trophies.”
