Yan Diomande Linked to Manchester United
Manchester United have rekindled their interest in RB Leipzig’s winger Yan Diomande, even though Paris Saint‑Germain remain the favourites to sign the 19‑year‑old. The Red Devils are looking to add a left‑sided creator to balance Michael Carrick’s attack this summer. United’s pursuit has persisted despite competition from other top clubs.
Breakout Bundesliga Star
At just 19, Diomande has emerged as one of Europe’s most compelling prospects after a stunning first full campaign in the Bundesliga. Leipzig paid €20 million (£17 m) to bring him from Spanish side Leganés, snapping up a player who had logged only 542 senior minutes at the time. Their gamble has paid off handsomely, with the youngster now central to their attacking plans.
This season he has contributed 13 goals and ten assists across all competitions, a strike‑rate that would impress any manager. His World Cup stint with Ivory Coast showcased his electric pace and skill, notably troubling Arsenal’s left‑back Piero Hincapie in a 1‑0 win over Ecuador. The exposure has sparked interest from several elite clubs.
PSG’s Pull and United’s Response
Liverpool initially led the race for Diomande’s signature, but they appeared to pull ahead after talks with his camp. However, the Ivorian has made clear he wants to move to PSG, attracted by the Ligue 1 club’s Champions League pedigree and the chance to become a Ballon d’Or contender. The shift in focus has opened the door for other suitors.
Leipzig and PSG are engaged in club‑to‑club negotiations, with the German side demanding a minimum of €120 million (£102 m) – a massive profit on their £17 m investment. Reports suggest Leipzig might consider a season‑long loan as part of any deal. Meanwhile, the player himself has given a “green light” to at least four clubs.
United’s Winger Race
With Liverpool and PSG ahead, United have looked at alternatives such as West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, a 24‑year‑old Dutch wizard available for £50 million after relegation. The Red Devils are still willing to explore other options as the window unfolds. Their budget appears flexible, having already spent £85 million on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
Manchester United, Manchester City, PSG and Liverpool are all in the mix, each believing they hold a strong position in the race. However, none of the clubs are prepared to exceed the €100 million (£87 m) ceiling the player’s camp has set. This price tag sits above the £85 m United recently invested in midfielders, suggesting they could afford a winger if the deal aligns.
What It Means for the Red Devils
United’s recent midfield acquisitions signal a willingness to invest heavily, meaning funds for a winger could be available if the right opportunity arrives. Diomande’s dual‑threat ability – combining speed, skill and a productive attacking output – would bolster Carrick’s forward options. Placing him alongside Amad on the opposite flank could create a terrifying pace that opponents will struggle to contain.
If INEOS believe they are in pole position, the race is far from a foregone conclusion. The club’s financial flexibility and the emerging market for elite wingers keep Diomande’s prospects alive. Fans can expect United to keep fighting for the Leipzig sensation as the transfer window progresses.
