R&A CEO Outlines Key Updates for The Open
World Cup Could Shift Final Round Tee Times
If England advances to the World Cup final, the R&A is considering moving the final round tee times to avoid a mass exodus of fans. The governing body expects the weekend’s final putt to start around 6:40 p.m. local time, leaving room for a possible three‑hole playoff. R&A CEO Mark Darbon said the change would likely be modest, at most 15 to 30 minutes earlier. He added that the decision will be finalized after the England‑Argentina semifinal.

New Fan Code of Conduct Takes Effect at Birkdale
The R&A has introduced a formal code of conduct for spectators at this week’s Open, marking the first time such rules are enforced. The policy outlines expected behavior and gives officials the power to eject offenders without a fine. Mark Darbon emphasized that the goal is to preserve the championship’s tradition while still allowing passionate fan support. The guidelines will be monitored throughout the week, and any fan who oversteps can be asked to leave the venue.

Golf‑Ball Rollback Shelved Until 2030
After industry feedback, the R&A has confirmed the postponement of the golf‑ball rollback to 2030. The decision, while not unanimous, reflects a clear majority preference for a later timeline. Mark Darbon noted that the PGA Tour and the PGA of America have shown openness to exploring model local rules instead. The governing body plans to work closely with manufacturers and other stakeholders during the next window to find a suitable solution. He expressed optimism that both tours will ultimately align with the two governing bodies’ goals.
Future Open Venues Mapped Out Through the 2050s
The R&A has secured a Memorandum of Understanding with the Liverpool City region, Sefton, and Wirral councils to host at least three Opens by 2050, expanding beyond the current schedule that runs to 2028. Meanwhile, Portmarnock near Dublin is progressing; Darbon indicated the feasibility study is nearly complete, with a clear decision expected before year’s end. The talks with the Irish government are moving in a positive direction, aiming to create a long‑term model for both The Open and the AIG Women’s Open. No new activity is anticipated for Muirfield or Turnberry at this time, and Prince’s Golf Club remains out of consideration for a future major.

Adam Scott Receives Inaugural Spirit of Golf Award
The R&A launched the new Spirit of Golf award to honor an individual who embodies the game’s values on a global stage. Mark Darbon presented the accolade to Australian Adam Scott, marking his 46th birthday and his 101st consecutive major start. Scott, praised for his professionalism and integrity, will receive a silver plate at an evening reception. In his acceptance remarks, Scott expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and pledged to continue his streak at Royal Birkdale this week. The award adds a new pillar to the R&A’s efforts to celebrate golf’s heritage and its leading ambassadors.
