Lavelle Seals Gotham Win at Queens Classic
Gotham FC posted a 1‑0 victory over the Washington Spirit on Wednesday night at Citi Field, a match billed as the Queens Classic and drawing a sellout crowd of 42,175 fans. The turnout set a new benchmark for women’s sporting events in New York City. Gotham finished the night with an 8‑3‑3 record, while Washington remained at 8‑3‑3 after the loss.
Rose Lavelle opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a long‑range chip that slipped past the far post. The strike marked her third goal of the season for the Atlantic conference side. The win also secured Gotham’s third consecutive clean sheet in league play.
Sam Kerr entered the contest in the 64th minute, signaling her return to the NWSL after more than six years with Chelsea. The Australian striker, who spent early years with Sky Blue (now Gotham) and the Chicago Stars, remains the league’s all‑time regular‑season scorer with 77 goals. Kerr also captured MVP honors in 2017 and 2019 and led the league in scoring from 2017 through 2019.
A collision between Washington’s Esme Morgan and Gotham’s Jordynn Dudley forced Dudley from the field in the first half, leaving the latter with a suspected concussion and ending her night early. The setback halted the Spirit’s three‑game winning streak despite matching Gotham’s identical record. Washington’s defensive lapses proved costly as Gotham tightened up after the incident.
Temperatures soared into the 90s and an air‑quality advisory was in effect due to Canadian wildfires, prompting two hydration breaks in each half. The challenging conditions did not deter either side from maintaining a high tempo throughout the match.
Gotham announced this month that it will relocate its home matches to the new 25,000‑seat Etihad Park next to Citi Field beginning in 2028. The partnership with MLS side New York City FC aims to boost local interest and capitalize on the stadium’s modern amenities. The team currently hosts games at Sports Illustrated Stadium in New Jersey.
Earlier this season, Denver Summit’s matchup against Washington set a league attendance mark of 63,000 at Empower Field, the Broncos’ NFL venue. Gotham’s recent sellout adds momentum toward further growth in NWSL fan engagement across the metro area.
Legacy at Pride: Barrow‑Road’s Upset
Bárbara Olivieri’s early strike powered the Boston Legacy to a 1‑0 win over the Orlando Pride. The goal, scored in the 17th minute despite two defenders closing in, gave the expansion side their fourth victory of the campaign. The result left Boston at 4‑7‑4 and snapped Orlando’s three‑match home winning run.
Orrего’s Lizbeth Ovalle appeared to level the match from a corner, but the attempt was flagged for interference with Boston keeper Casey Murphy. The disallowance kept the scoreline tight and highlighted the defensive discipline of the visitors. Despite the loss, the Pride remain in a playoff contention spot at 6‑7‑2.
