Alexander Isak’s Need for Chances at Liverpool
Alexander Isak arrived at Anfield as a £125m club‑record signing and turned 26 earlier this year. His debut campaign was hampered by recurring injuries, leaving him sidelined for much of the season. In 22 league appearances he managed just four goals, a far cry from the form that made him a standout at Newcastle. The striker’s limited impact saw him labelled “far too peripheral” in many matches, failing to meet the expectations set by his transfer fee.
Former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele has spoken of his belief that Isak can still flourish at Anfield if he is constantly supplied with scoring opportunities. He praised the striker’s ability to adapt from Spanish football to the Premier League and described him as a “top, top striker” who thrives when midfielders and wingers arrive on the ball to serve him. Makelele pointed to Isak’s success at Real Sociedad—where the forward excelled in a possession‑based, quick‑transition system—as the blueprint he needs at Liverpool. The Frenchman warned that a striker who isn’t fed will never score, and urged the club’s attacking set‑up to feed him regularly.
Isak’s poor first season also highlighted a lack of chemistry with his new teammates, a problem that did not help his injury‑ridden campaign. The Reds’ attack has been criticised for being slow and ponderous, making it hard to create the quick chances a centre‑forward needs. New head coach Andoni Iraola, known for a high‑pressing, fast‑paced style, is expected to change that dynamic. If Liverpool can get the ball to Isak quicker in the final third, the striker’s finishing ability could become a decisive weapon.
The onus now rests on Isak to stay fit, integrate with his teammates and maximise every chance he receives. Consistent availability will allow him to build the kind of chemistry that underpins a productive season. He enjoyed plenty of game time at the World Cup, a recent experience that could give him added confidence heading into the club campaign. Making the most of Iraola’s new system will be key for Isak to finally prove the £125m investment was worthwhile.
