Sanju Samson Quits RR After RR Ready Without Me

Sanju Samson Swaps Rajasthan Royals For Chennai Super Kings

A Decade With Rajasthan Royals Comes To An End

After more than ten years with the same franchise, Sanju Samson has decided it was time for a change. The wicketkeeper‑batter called the move one of the toughest choices in his career, noting that both he and Rajasthan Royals eventually felt ready to go separate ways. He captained the Royals for five seasons before the decision was made. “You do your part, and you move out,” Samson explained, reflecting on the moment he felt the team could thrive without him.

Samson’s departure was not sudden; it came after a period of introspection following the conclusion of IPL 2025. He acknowledges that staying too long can create a sense of ownership that makes a switch feel unnatural. The emotional weight of leaving a familiar set‑up made the trade especially difficult for him.

Why Chennai Super Kings Attracted Samson

Several teams showed interest, yet Chennai Super Kings stood out for Samson. The environment, the people around the franchise, and the influence of MS Dhoni were decisive factors. He highlighted strong personal connections with Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad as key reasons. “CSK, Mahi bhai’s influence, the franchise itself, and my friends there, especially Ruturaj, meant I had great connections,” he said. The trade process itself added another layer of complexity, but eventually the deal fell into place.

Samson described the trade as a turning point, noting that the negotiations involved multiple parties agreeing on a swap. He emphasized the uncertainty of whether CSK wanted him, but the eventual agreement felt rewarding. The move positions him with a team that already matches his playing style and career aspirations.

Beyond the on‑field considerations, CSK’s recent success and its reputation for nurturing talent also played a role. The franchise’s steady performance in recent seasons gave Samson confidence that he could continue to develop and contribute.

The Dhoni Dream And Future Outlook

From childhood, Samson idolised Dhoni, cutting out his pictures and dreaming of one day sharing the crease with him. The former India captain’s aggressive batting and leadership were the inspirations that fuelled those ambitions. “I used to go to sleep thinking, ‘I have to play one day too.’” That dream now takes a new shape as Samson joins CSK, while Dhoni sits out the entire IPL 2026 due to a calf injury.

Even with Dhoni sidelined, Samson remains hopeful that his anticipation of a partnership will eventually materialise. The longing to bat alongside his childhood hero persists, and the new environment offers another chance to get closer to that vision. The overlap may have to wait, but the possibility remains a driving factor for him.

Early IPL Journey And Debut Highlights

Samson’s IPL story began in 2013 with Rajasthan Royals, after a frustrating spell on the bench. He approached then‑captain Rahul Dravid, who advised patience. “He calmly explained that I needed to be patient and that my time would come,” Samson recalled. The frustration led him to channel his emotions into intense net practice, determined to prove his worth.

His breakthrough arrived when wicketkeeper Dishant Yagnik suffered an injury, opening a window for Samson. He made his debut against Punjab (then KXIP) and secured a win for the Royals. In that match he scored 27 not out batting at number six and contributed three or four dismissals behind the stumps. However, Yagnik’s recovery meant Samson was dropped for the following game, underscoring the competitive nature of the squad.

That early experience taught Samson the importance of perseverance and readiness when opportunity knocks. It set the foundation for his long tenure with RR and now marks a new chapter with CSK, where he hopes to continue building his legacy in the league.
