Emma Sullivan Sets PR at Edmonton, Eyes Sub‑2‑Minute 800

Debut on the International Stage

On July 12, Emma Sullivan stepped into the pro field for the first time in her signature event, the 800 meters, at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational. She capped the race with a personal‑record 2:00.09, securing the victory. The meet marked Sullivan’s inaugural outing beyond national borders, giving her a taste of elite competition. “It was an amazing experience,” she later said, expressing gratitude for the chance.

Fresh from her debut, Sullivan reflected on the confidence boost it provided ahead of the upcoming USATF Open Nationals. She now aims to become the first athlete from her collegiate program to breach the sub‑two‑minute barrier. The Edmonton result is already being cited as a launchpad for her pro ambitions.

College Journey and Comeback

Sullivan earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Kennesaw State in December 2024, completing her eligibility in both indoor and outdoor track while also securing a coaching certificate. She transferred to KSU after starting her college career at Jacksonville State, where a torn Achilles tendon sidelined her for most of a season. At one point she doubted whether she would run again, but relentless rehab efforts led to a full recovery. Since returning, she has faced no setbacks and described herself as “super healthy all year.”

Her competitive resume includes six Conference USA gold medals, two All‑American honors, and multiple KSU record holdings. Sullivan’s resilience was on full display at the 2025 NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where she placed 19th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.71. She returned to the NCAA meet this spring, posting a 2:00.37 personal‑best in a semifinal, though she narrowly missed the final.

That meet was historic: for the first time, all eight finalists eclipsed the two‑minute mark. Sullivan noted the significance, observing that her own time would have qualified for the final a year earlier. Her family attended to witness her finish 12th at the USATF Open Nationals, underscoring their continued support.

Preparations for USATF Open Nationals

Eight‑time T&G Super Team all‑star at Shepherd Hill Regional, Sullivan is currently fine‑tuning her training for the USATF Open Nationals scheduled July 23‑26 in New York. This event will be her final race representing Kennesaw State, and she has set an ambitious yet reachable target: breaking two minutes. “To run 1:59, if I do that, all my dreams would be complete,” she said, highlighting the importance of closing her collegiate chapter on a high note.

Her coaching certification and interdisciplinary degree reflect her long‑term plan to transition into professional running after the nationals. Sullivan’s mind is focused on delivering her best performance for the team she has represented for the last few years.

Vision After Racing

Post‑competition, Sullivan intends to turn professional, pursuing a career that blends athletics with education. She hopes to teach kindergarten and eventually coach at the Division I level. “I’m going into USAs with ‘last one (as an amateur and representing KSU), best one’ vibes,” she explained, emphasizing her drive to leave a lasting impact both on and off the track.

Maintaining strong ties with her former Shepherd Hill coaches, Nicole Fossas and Len Harmon, Sullivan credited their guidance for her resurgence. “They text me all the time,” she noted, adding that she constantly reminds them of their pivotal role in her journey. Their ongoing support continues to fuel her ambition as she eyes the next chapter of her career.
