UL Football Looks to Youth and Returners for 2026 Season
The Ragin’ Cajuns highlighted their rebuilding agenda at the 2026 Sun Belt Conference Media Day in New Orleans, emphasizing a roster built around young talent and seasoned returners. Coach Michael Desormeaux spoke about a squad that signed 41 freshmen and is ready for the next step in program development. The event, held July 16, showcased how UL hopes to translate youthful energy into competitive results.
Youth Pushes UL Rebuild
Desormeaux’s staff is counting on a barrage of new faces to fill critical gaps left by transfer losses. The running back room features a mix of experience and potential, with sophomore Steven Blanco as the most seasoned back, transfer Anthony Reagan Jr. (Howard) leading in gameday snaps, and redshirt freshmen Darrell Smith and JJ Garner slated to share the rushing duties. The coach praised Darrell’s consistency in spring drills and highlighted Steven’s power‑running style, while noting JJ’s raw talent still needs growth in understanding the offense.
Defensively, the secondary is the youngest segment but also the most promising, led by sophomore cornerback Brent Gordon Jr., who recorded 11 pass breakups in 2025. The defensive line faces more uncertainty after losing Jaden Dugger and Jordan Lawson, though sophomore Priest Ashe, junior Lance Williams and other returners are expected to step into those roles. The coaching staff hopes the line will become the backbone of the defense in the upcoming season.

Returners Fuel Cajuns’ Hopes
Star seniors Lunch Winfield and George Jackson anchored the Cajuns’ culture during the offseason, embodying the program’s identity. George, a sixth‑year veteran, missed most of 2025 with a season‑ending injury after starting four games, and spoke of a “redemption year” and finishing unfinished business. He cited teammates like Cooper Fordham, Kaden Moreau, Matt Broussard and left tackle Zay Alexander as key returners who will help build the squad’s foundation.
Desormeaux emphasized that these veterans will serve as the nucleus for rebuilding, pairing their experience with the influx of new talent. Winfield, who kept the team alive during a difficult stretch last season, is also expected to provide leadership. The blend of seasoned contributors and youthful prospects shapes the narrative of a transitional campaign that could reshape UL’s standing in the Sun Belt over the next few years.
