Jamal Adams’ Jets Reunion Bid After Raiders Season
Las Vegas moved on from linebacker Jamal Adams after a single campaign, opting to sign two promising free agents in Nakobe Dean and Quay Walker. Adams, 30, remains without a team as July slips into midsummer, and he has made it clear his preferred destination is the New York Jets, the franchise that drafted him sixth overall in 2017. The former first‑overall safety’s plea for a reunion underscores a lingering bond that neither a trade to Seattle nor a stint in Las Vegas could erase.
Adams first demanded a trade from the Jets in 2020 after contract talks stalled, ending up in a blockbuster deal with Seattle that sent two first‑round picks and Bradley McDougald to the Seahawks. In an Instagram chat, the player admitted his youthful immaturity, saying, “I’ve apologized for it,” he added, “I was 24 years old brotha. I was definitely immature.” He later told a fan, “I’ve tried Brodie. No lies. It’s in their hands. …It’s only right if you ask me.”
After a stint with Las Vegas, Adams logged 45 total tackles, one sack and a forced fumble, but struggled in coverage with a 98.6 passer rating allowed and 12 missed tackles, per Pro Football Focus. He now finds himself on the sidelines as the Raiders emphasized a new defensive identity, while the veteran still professes his dedication: “I left my mark in New York. At the end of the day, you have to respect that. I was one of the best to come through.”
Raiders Add Dean and Walker to Bolster Linebacker Group
ESPN’s Ben Solak believes the signing of Nakobe Dean and Quay Walker represents the second‑best positional upgrade in the NFL this offseason, trailing only the Arizona Cardinals’ off‑season overhaul. “Dean and Walker are a complementary duo,” Solak noted. “Dean might be undersized, but he has many traits of a prototypical signal‑calling Mike linebacker: great recognition and instincts, plus physical tackling skills. With Dean calling the plays, Walker will be freed to play more run‑and‑chase roles, which suits his size and speed strengths.”
Dean, praised for his cerebral yet aggressive style, is expected to serve as the primary playbook reader, while Walker’s 6‑foot‑4, 245‑pound frame offers room for growth, according to linebackers coach Ronell Williams. “And I told them in our early meetings, ‘The good Lord blessed y’all with some things that you can’t teach.’ Quay is 6‑foot‑4, 245 pounds and he can move. The thing that makes me excited is he has room to grow and develop in his game,” Williams said. “The coolest part about Nakobe, you watch his film, he’s super violent,” he added, “but he’s probably more cerebral, as violent as he is.”
Both newcomers are slated to become core contributors under first‑year defensive coordinator Rob Leonard, who projects a breakout season for the tandem that could anchor the Raiders’ defense for years to come. The aggressive effort to upgrade the linebacking position signals a strategic pivot for Las Vegas, moving past the limitations shown by Adams’ single season in the middle.
