P.J. Thompson has been promoted to associate head coach of Purdue men’s basketball, a move announced by the Boilermakers in April. The promotion comes with a noticeable raise, as his salary will increase to $600,000 per year beginning with the 2026‑27 season. Previously, Thompson earned $400,000, so the $200,000 jump reflects the university’s investment in his ascent.

Thompson’s Role and Impact

In his new capacity, Thompson coordinates the offense and oversees the recruiting and practice plans. Last season his units posted the best adjusted efficiency score in KenPom’s history, highlighting his strategic impact. He has also been instrumental in developing current NBA G League point guard Braden Smith, who graduated as the NCAA’s all‑time assists leader.

Staff Raises Across the Board

The coaching staff raises announced alongside Thompson’s promotion include several other assistants. Paul Lusk’s pay rose from $475,000 to $525,000, while Brandon Brantley moved from $500,000 to $525,000. Sasha Stefanovic’s compensation increased from $150,000 to $200,000, and first‑year assistant Kenneth Lowe will earn $200,000. Together, these adjustments boost the total assistant coach payroll to $2.05 million, up from $1.85 million.
