Iowa QB Battle Heats Up Ahead of Season

Mark Gronowski’s Legacy and the Void He Left

Last season saw Iowa elevate its quarterback play to the best level in a decade, thanks to transfer Mark Gronowski from South Dakota State. The Hawkeyes’ offense was revitalized by his combination of mobility and arm talent, and the unit took a clear step forward under his leadership. Gronowski’s departure to the NFL now means the program must fill a sizable gap.

Iowa has chosen not to add a quarterback through the transfer portal this offseason, placing full confidence in two homegrown options. The decision underscores the coaching staff’s belief in internal development after a year dominated by Gronowski’s performance.

Hecklinski’s Offseason Routine and Goals

Jeremy Hecklinski has been the focal point for fans this week after taking the media through his summer priorities. “For me, it’s really about maintaining my weight and continuing to work on my feet in the pocket,” Hecklinski said, explaining his focus on keeping his feet “live at all times” despite occasional dead legs.

Hecklinski added that camp will be the proving ground. “Camp will tell the tale in that nature. I’m the type of player I am and Hank’s the type of player he is. I think it just comes down to the decision of who they want to go with,” he noted, referencing his teammate Hank Brown.

The Iowa signal‑caller also described how the lack of a new quarterback addition felt like a reward for his early‑season grind. “I was excited, I felt like I had paid my dues early on when I got here in June. For that to come to fruition, and to see my hard work pay off, is really nice,” Hecklinski remarked.

Why Iowa Is Staying the Course

Under offensive coordinator Tim Lester, the Hawkeyes aim to remain explosive without sacrificing ball security. Hecklinski says he has worked to temper his aggressive style. “I feel like I’m a very aggressive quarterback, I like to take shots. Since spring ball and even in the winter phase, we’ve been working on things. I feel like I’ve honed in on completions and taking what they’re giving me,” he explained.

Lester’s summer goals for Hecklinski centered on careening the ball and limiting risky throws. “Mine was taking care of the ball more and take less aggressive shots. Take shots when they’re there, but not all the time. I’ve gotten better on that since last year and my numbers from the spring really show it,” Hecklinski reported. He reassured fans that a focus on security does not mean a drop in tempo. “We threw the (expletive) out of the ball in the spring,” he added.

The Coaching Decision Looms

Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa coaching staff will face a pivotal choice in the next few weeks as the regular season draws near. The competition between Brown and Hecklinski has remained tight all summer, with both quarterbacks believing they bring distinct qualities to the role.

Why the battle matters goes beyond just winning a starting spot; it sets the tone for Iowa’s offensive identity after a season that leaned heavily on Gronowski’s playmaking. The coaching staff’s pick will shape how the Hawkeyes attack defenses in 2025 and beyond.
