Guardians Past the All-Star Break: How They Stack Up
Starting Rotation Exceeds Early Hopes
Slade Cecconi struggled to open the campaign, while Tanner Bibee tossed a few rough innings. Yet the staff as a whole ranks seventh in the league for ERA and has logged the third‑most innings, just 0.1 shy of the Dodgers. Parker Messick has turned heads enough to earn Rookie of the Year buzz, and Gavin Williams is already in Cy Young conversations. Joey Cantillo has been a quiet workhorse, and the whole rotation shows signs of depth that few expected at the start.
Bullpen Trails Recent Strengths
In 2024 the Guardians’ relief corps led the AL in both fWAR and ERA; by 2025 they sat third. This season they sit eighth in ERA (3.74) and twelfth in fWAR, a clear step back. Hunter Gaddis missed spring training and the early stretch, while Erik Sabrowski was sidelined from late May through most of June. Daniel Espino and Franco Aleman have shown promise, and All‑Star closer Cade Smith has been dominant in relief, yet the overall picture remains below preseason expectations.
Hitting Improves Despite Major Injuries
The 2025 offense finished near the bottom of the league with a wRC+ of 87 and an OPS of .670. Expectations for 2026 were modest, but three key contributors—José Ramírez, Angel Martínez and Chase DeLauter—went on the injured list on June 13. Before that loss the team posted a wRC+ of 95 and an OPS of .688 (22nd and 27th overall). Even after their return, the numbers sit at a wRC+ of 92 and OPS of .679, still modest but better than many projected given the setbacks.
Baserunning Hits Target Expectations
The Guardians are fifth in stolen bases (93) and seventh in FanGraphs’ base‑running metric (BsR 5.2). José Ramírez has been aggressive on the bases, and teammates like Travis Bazzana, Chase DeLauter and Angel Martínez have added to the activity. The team’s overall attack feels steady and aligned with preseason forecasts.
Defense Holds Its Own
On the defensive side the Guardians rank eighth in FRV (9) and ninth in FanGraphs’ defensive rating (8.6). Steven Kwan continues to provide elite play across multiple outfield spots. Daniel Schneemann is in the mix for an AL utility Gold Glove, while Austin Hedges and Patrick Bailey have combined to deliver solid catching, pitch‑calling and game‑management work that bolsters the rotation.
Brayan Rocchio’s Comeback Story
The most surprising storyline is Brayan Rocchio, a player who was demoted in 2024 and struggled early in 2025. He entered the All‑Star break ranked ninth in the AL by fWAR (2.9) and sports a 113 wRC+. Rocchio has also swiped 15 of 20 bases to open the season and carries a 9.9 defensive rating. His clutch hits, walk‑offs and game‑saving plays have come at precisely the moments the club needed them, making him the single most overdue candidate for All‑Star consideration.
Looking to the Second Half
Preseason models placed the Guardians in the mid‑to‑upper 70s win range, and they sit tied for first in the AL Central despite the injuries. The second‑half schedule is the easiest in baseball, and key players such as Ramírez, Martínez and DeLauter are expected back within weeks. With a solid core of young contributors and a depth chart that has exceeded expectations in pitching, defense and base running, the Guardians have built a firm foundation for a push toward the postseason.
