Nashville Should Have Hosted 2026 World Cup: Fan’s Plea
Scotland fan Shaun, who has been roaming the United States this summer, took to X/Twitter to argue that Nashville deserved a spot on the world stage. He posted, “I’ll say it… Nashville would have made a tremendous World Cup venue.” The comment reflects a growing chorus of supporters who believe the Music City could have accommodated the tournament’s demands.
The 2026 World Cup is being staged across three nations, with the United States, Canada and Mexico acting as hosts. Finals are set for New York New Jersey Stadium, while the third‑place match will take place at Miami Stadium. Cities such as Boston and Dallas have already welcomed matches, leaving some fans wondering why Nashville was not among them.
Nashville did submit a bid, but FIFA has never officially explained why it was passed over. The city’s Nissan Stadium raised questions during the evaluation process. In a 2022 interview, Tennessee Titans CEO Burke Nihill said, “We answered all of their questions and we felt strong that the stadium wasn’t going to be an issue and I guess we’ll never know.”
Butch Spyridon, head of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corporation, also weighed in. He noted, “They [FIFA] grilled us and we answered them and then we put it in writing.” He stopped short of blaming the venue, admitting it “raised questions” but insisting the city provided the assurances needed.
The ongoing debate over Nashville’s candidacy highlights how fan enthusiasm can shape perceptions of a host city. While the official record remains silent, the social‑media outcry suggests the community still feels the loss. As the sport looks toward future tournaments, Nashville’s experience may inform how bidders address concerns about infrastructure and support.
The conversation continues online, with fans debating the criteria used to select host cities. Whether Nashville will try again remains uncertain, but the summer’s World Cup has reignited local pride. As fans reflect on the games they missed, the idea of Nashville as a future host lingers in the air.
