Missouri AG Investigates Matt Miller After Crash
Attorney General Opens Inquiry
Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway confirmed that a formal investigation into former ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller began after a spate of complaints. The inquiry focuses on allegations that Miller failed to deliver the services he promised to clients who paid for training camps and fantasy football leagues he organized. Twenty‑six separate complaints have been filed with the office so far, prompting Hanaway to call the case “lengthy” and note there is “a lot of smoke” that may lead to substantive findings.
Serious Crash and Aftermath
On June 17, Miller was driving east on Missouri Route 96 in Jasper County when his 2023 Ford Bronco crossed the center line and struck the driver’s side of a semi‑tractor trailer. The impact was captured on dash‑cam video released by the California Post, showing the force of the collision. He was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Joplin, where doctors performed a life‑saving amputation of his left arm. Subsequent surgeries also repaired his femur and patella, and he expressed hope for a prosthetic replacement.
Fantasy Leagues and Charity Concerns
After the accident, Miller’s family launched a GoFundMe to cover medical expenses. The campaign reached $51,147 toward a $55,000 goal before being paused on July 3. Meanwhile, online users began highlighting past financial disputes tied to Miller’s fantasy football ventures. Customers reported paying entry fees as high as $500 for charity leagues, only to find Miller unresponsive when it came time to claim winnings or verify charitable donations.
More than 40 people have shared similar experiences with Awful Announcing since the story broke, underscoring a pattern of alleged misconduct. Hanaway stressed that the investigation is not directed at the GoFundMe effort, which is viewed as a separate humanitarian initiative.
Leave from ESPN
Miller took to social media on July 10 to announce he would be stepping away indefinitely from ESPN and placed on leave while he concentrates on recovery. He detailed the successful surgeries, noting the amputation and the preservation of his left leg. The analyst thanked fans for their support and prayers as he begins a difficult rehabilitation process.
The case highlights the scrutiny that public figures face when personal tragedies intersect with business activities, especially in the competitive world of fantasy sports and scouting services.
