Josh Kerr Shatters Mile World Record in London
New Benchmark Set
The 28‑year‑old from Edinburgh made history Saturday at the Novuna London Athletics Meet, clocking 3 minutes 42.66 seconds for the mile. This time erased Hicham El Guerrouj’s 27‑year‑old mark of 3:43.13, which had stood since 1999 in Rome. Kerr celebrated with a lap of honor around London Stadium, his shoes and the track his only companions.
The margin of victory was decisive: more than three seconds ahead of American Yared Nuguse, who finished second in 3:45.69. Speaking to the BBC, Kerr praised the atmosphere, calling the crowd support “just incredible.” “I was absolutely deaf in that last 110 meters,” he added, describing the final stretch as a surreal glide.

Background and Rivalry
Kerr’s previous personal best of 3:45.34, achieved in 2024, had hinted at his upward trajectory. Earlier in the season, he and Jakob Ingebrigtsen traded barbs over pacing strategies, with Kerr suggesting his rival relied on helpers not permitted at championships. At the Paris Olympics, Ingebrigtsen faded to fourth while American Cole Hocker stunned the field, leaving Kerr to claim second place.
The duo also clashed at the previous year’s world championships, where Ingebrigtsen stalled in a preliminary heat and Kerr limped into a final won by Portugal’s Isaac Nader. With no major championships on the calendar this year, Kerr pivoted to the mile, a distance absent from the Olympics but rich in historic resonance, most famously tied to Roger Bannister’s 1954 sub‑four‑minute breakthrough.
Looking Ahead
Breaking a world record at age 28 underscores Kerr’s emergence as a dominant middle‑distance force. His new mark sets a fresh benchmark for the mile and re‑ignites debate over the event’s place in elite competition. Fans and pundits will watch whether the record holds as Kerr continues to chase other historic barriers in the sport.
