Coleman ISD Names Zach Edington Interim Football Coach

Long‑time Bluecats Assistant Takes Over

Zach Edington has officially been appointed as the interim boys athletic coordinator and football coach for the 2026‑2027 school year. The 22‑year veteran of the Coleman ISD and Bluecat athletic program will step into a role that includes overseeing the boys and girls golf teams and serving as offensive coordinator, a position he has held for the past 14 years.

“I’m excited for the opportunity,” Edington said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us this year, and our overall goal is to get one of those four playoff spots. We’re gonna have to get better every day.”

New Direction After Elder’s Departure

The hiring follows the sudden departure of longtime athletic director and football coach John Elder, who stepped down after 12 years leading the Bluecats. Elder’s exit leaves a void that Edington says he is ready to fill, emphasizing the need for rapid improvement across the program.

Coleman’s recent performance has been modest, with a combined 6‑16 record over the last two seasons. This follows a standout 2021 campaign in which the team posted an 11‑1 record and advanced to the third round of the postseason.

Upcoming Schedule in a Realigned District

After the UIL Reclassification and Realignment, Coleman now competes in Class 2A Division I Region II, specifically District 7‑2A DI. The Bluecats will face Bangs, Brady, Johnson City LBJ, Mason and San Saba throughout the season.

The season opener is set for the road against San Angelo Grape Creek on Friday, August 28 at 7 p.m.
