UConn Years: Building a Foundation

Manuel took the reins at UConn in February 2012, arriving as the Big East began to fragment after Pitt, West Virginia and Syracuse defected to power conferences. Within two months he also replaced the iconic Jim Calhoun as men’s basketball coach, hiring Kevin Ollie, a former UConn championship guard, to lead the Huskies. On the football side, Manuel dismissed Paul Pasqualoni after just four games in the 2013 AAC season and brought in Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco. He returned to his alma mater in January 2016, initially overseeing a program that had just earned its first bowl appearance in half a decade and had a surging basketball team that posted a 14‑5 start in 2016 with victories over Michigan, Texas and Ohio State. Manuel kept Jim Harbaugh after a 2‑4 finish in the COVID‑shortened 2020 season, and the Wolverines responded with a 30‑3 overall record over the next three years, three consecutive wins over Ohio State and a 2024 College Football Playoff championship.
