ESPN Slashes Jobs After NFL Network Deal, Memo Reveals

ESPN Lays Off Staff After NFL Network Takeover

The Layoff Wave and Its Roots

ESPN is cutting jobs for the first time in three years, a move directly tied to its April acquisition of NFL Network. Chairman Jimmy Pitaro explained in a Tuesday memo, obtained by the Associated Press, that the integration of NFL assets forced a reassessment of teams and resources. The August deal also brought NFL Fantasy and the RedZone channel to cable and satellite providers, while giving the NFL a 10% equity stake in ESPN. Regulators signed off in January, and NFL Network’s staff officially joined ESPN on April 1. Pitaro described the decisions as “difficult” but necessary to position the network for the future.

Most of the impacted roles are in production and behind‑the‑scenes functions, though a few on‑air personalities are also affected. The company pledged to treat departing employees with compassion and to provide support during the transition. The layoffs extend beyond the newly acquired units, reflecting broader adjustments across the organization.

Impact on Notable Talent

Ryan Clark, an ESPN NFL analyst since 2015, learned of his dismissal during Monday’s “NFL Live” broadcast. He was meant to be informed Tuesday morning, but the news leaked before the company could deliver the message in person. Clark did not complete his show appearance and later took to social media, sharing a video of himself working out and offering prayers for everyone else losing their jobs.

Karl Ravech, a fixture at ESPN since 1993, saw his role shift after “Sunday Night Baseball” moved to NBC this season. He remained with the network long enough to call Monday night’s Dodgers‑Phillies game before the cuts were announced. Tom Pelissero, who had been with NFL Network since 2017, is also among those let go. In contrast, ESPN recently renewed contracts with NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter.

Broader Disney Cuts and What Lies Ahead

The ESPN reductions are part of a larger set of cutbacks rolling through the Walt Disney Company this week. Company leadership emphasized a commitment to supporting affected staff as they navigate job transitions. While the exact number of positions eliminated has not been disclosed, the moves mark a significant restructuring for Disney’s sports division. Employees are being encouraged to explore internal opportunities and external resources as they plan their next career steps.
