Bhatia Consortium Eyes Liverpool Minority Stake
New Consortium Shows Interest in Liverpool
A group led by British‑Indian businessman Amit Bhatia has approached Liverpool Football Club about a minority investment. The proposal comes through a consortium that Bhatia leads, manages and represents, according to a Fenway Sports Group statement. No formal agreement exists yet, with talks still in their earliest phase.
Liverpool’s current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), confirmed they received the inquiry. The club’s valuation has risen sharply since FSG bought it for £300 million in 2010; Forbes now puts the price at £4.6 billion. This follow‑up interest mirrors a previous minority sale to the investment firm Dynasty in 2023.
Such a minority stake would follow the pattern of recent football investments, allowing the club to tap new capital while keeping day‑to‑day control with FSG. The move also highlights growing appetite from wealthy Asian investors in European clubs.

Bhatia’s Departure from QPR
At the same time, Bhatia stepped down from the QPR board after 18 years, transferring his shares to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam. He had joined the club in 2007, progressed to vice‑chairman and then chaired QPR from 2018 until 2023. His exit marks the end of a long tenure that saw the club move between divisions and produce many memorable moments.
In a farewell message on QPR’s website, Bhatia described the club as a vital part of his life for nearly two decades. He thanked the fans, players, managers and staff for making him feel part of the QPR family. The statement reflected pride and gratitude for the experience at Loftus Road.
His exit reduces QPR’s internal investment from a prominent family linked to steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Mittal’s son‑in‑law, Bhatia is connected to a £23.2 billion fortune, and earlier this year Mittal teamed with Adal Poonawalla to acquire a controlling stake in the Rajasthan Royals IPL side.
FSG’s Track Record with Minority Stakes
FSG, which also controls the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Penguins, previously sold a minority portion of Liverpool to Dynasty in 2023. That transaction set a template for raising capital without relinquishing majority control. A new investment from Bhatia would likely follow a similar structure.
The club’s valuation surge underscores why outside investors are interested. A minority share could provide fresh funds for stadium upgrades, academy development, or further recruitment. It also reflects a broader trend of sports clubs seeking capital from global financial players while retaining local ownership.
Family Connections and Broader Implications
Bhatia’s link to the Mittal empire adds another layer to his football ambitions. The Mittal‑Poonawalla partnership in the IPL demonstrates the family’s expanding sports portfolio across continents. Should the Liverpool deal materialize, it would be another example of Asian wealth entering European football.
Industry observers note that minority investments often bring expertise in global marketing and sponsor acquisition. For Liverpool, securing a strategic partner could enhance its reach in emerging markets, especially in South Asia where Bhatia’s background provides valuable insight.

What This Means for Liverpool Going Forward
If the consortium secures approval, Liverpool will add another high‑profile partner to its ownership group. The infusion could accelerate plans for stadium enhancements, digital platform growth, and youth program expansion. Moreover, the involvement of a figure familiar with Asian markets may open doors for sponsorship deals and fan engagement across the subcontinent.
Even if the talks stall, the mere interest signals a robust market for top‑tier clubs. FSG’s willingness to entertain new minority owners suggests a strategy of flexible capital raising while preserving control. Fans can expect continued focus on competitive performance, backed by fresh investment possibilities.
