Max Fried Set to Return to Yankees’ Mounds on Wednesday
Fried Joins Yankees for Doubleheader vs Pirates
After skipping his next rehab stint, left‑hander Max Fried will step up to join the Yankees for a Wednesday doubleheader against Pittsburgh. Fried, who was slated to pitch at Triple‑A Scranton/Wilkes‑Barre, will instead take the mound in the second game of the twin‑bill. The Pirates will be the visitors as New York looks to fill the pitching hole created by the extra game.
Boone Announces Plan Change
Yankees manager Aaron Boone disclosed the revised schedule during his appearance on the Talkin’ Yanks podcast. Boone explained that Fried was originally set for a rehab start at Scranton on Wednesday, but the doubleheader’s need for an extra arm prompted the shift. He added that Fried will be kept to about 60 pitches when he takes the hill.
Fried’s Rehab Journey and Stats
The timing marks a major step in Fried’s recovery from a left elbow bone bruise that landed him on the injured list in mid‑May. Before the injury, the 10‑game veteran posted a 3.21 ERA, struck out 50 batters and logged 61.2 innings. In his lone rehab outing on Friday, Fried allowed two runs on five hits, recorded three strikeouts, issued no walks and worked three innings for Scranton/Wilkes‑Barre. He threw 52 pitches, with 32 of them being strikes.
Game‑day rotation details
Gerrit Cole will toe the rubber for the opening contest of the doubleheader, while Fried is slated to start the nightcap. Both pitchers bring experience to a matchup that will be closely watched by New York fans hoping to see the return of a key arm from the injury‑plagued stretch.
