Brandon McCoy Back at Michigan Basketball, 5-Star Decision

Brandon McCoy Back at Michigan Basketball, 5-Star Decision

Brandon McCoy Jr. Keeps Promise To Michigan

McCoy Confirms He’ll Play for Wolverines

Five‑star guard Brandon McCoy Jr. will stay with Michigan basketball despite the coaching staff overhaul. ESPN reported Saturday night that the prospect, who pledged during the Final Four, is committed to the program even as Dusty May moves on. The decision caps a turbulent two‑week period for the Wolverines.

McCoy, rated the No. 2 shooting guard nationally and No. 3 in California, enters his freshman season as the top recruit in Michigan’s 2026 class. He helped lead Sierra Canyon to a 30‑1 mark and a California Division I state title in March 2026. At 6‑5, 190 pounds, his 6‑10 wingspan makes him a rarity at the guard position.

New Coaching Era, Same Commitment

May announced his move to the Dallas Mavericks on June 22, leaving the Wolverines in the hands of interim coach Mike Boynton Jr. for the 2026‑27 campaign. Boynton’s first priority has been to lock down the roster, and McCoy’s pledge aids that effort. The retention of McCoy signals continuity for a program navigating a transition.

Other key returners include Trey McKenney, Elliot Cadeau, transfer Moustapha Thiam and JP Estrella. Boynton has also added depth with complementary role players. Together they aim to build on the foundation laid by McCoy’s arrival.

What the Pledge Means for Michigan

McCoy’s stay gives the Wolverines a proven five‑star who can guard, handle the ball, and finish at the rim. His 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks per game in EYBL last summer show defensive upside rare for a guard. Analysts see him as a future interior‑type wing who can become a go‑to scorer.

From a recruiting perspective, the news reinforces Michigan’s reputation for developing talent under pressure. McCoy is expected to be a catalyst, much like Trey McKenney was upon his arrival. Going forward, his presence could elevate the entire 2026 class and position the team for a deep run in 2027.
