Tour de France Stage at Risk from Southwest France Wildfire
Wildfire Grows to Over 1,500 Hectares Near Tour Route
A forest fire has already consumed more than 1,500 hectares (5.8 square miles) in the southwest of France, putting the upcoming third stage of the Tour de France under threat. Cyclists are scheduled to finish in Les Angles on Monday, roughly 60 kilometres from the blaze. Local authorities say a call on whether to cancel the stage will be made âbefore the end of the day,â while race director ChristianâŻPrudhomme has warned the route could be altered if needed.
Emergency Response Mobilizes Hundreds of Firefighters
French rescue teams have deployed 750 firefighters, 200 vehicles and nine waterâbombing helicopters to contain the flames in the PyreneesâOrientales department. The fire line stretches about 18 kilometres (11.18 miles) and remains active despite containment efforts. Two peopleâone firefighter and a residentâare in critical condition, and officials are racing to keep the blaze from reaching the Tet river and the hardâtoâaccess Aspres mountainous area.
Race Officials Consider Stage Cancellation
Authorities in the region are monitoring the situation closely and will decide on a possible stage cancellation by the evening of Sunday. ChristianâŻPrudhomme indicated earlier that the race could adapt its itinerary if safety concerns persist. The decision comes after several southern departments were upgraded to âvery high fire riskâ by Meteo France. Any changes would be communicated promptly to riders and fans.
Spainâs Catalonian Blaze Also Casts a Shadow
Across the border, a wildfire in Spainâs Catalonia region has scorched roughly 2,200 hectares of forest in Les Gavarres. The incident, which began on Friday in the Costa Brava, was likely sparked by a workerâs circular saw near a road, leading to rapid ignition. Although the blaze is now stabilised, high temperatures and lingering smoke could still hamper full extinguishment.
Implications for the Tour de France Schedule
The combined threat of extreme heat and two major wildfires adds a layer of uncertainty to this yearâs Tour, which opened in Barcelona on Saturday. If the third stage is cancelled or rerouted, the raceâs timing and rider strategy could shift dramatically. Fans and sponsors will watch closely as officials balance athlete safety against the eventâs traditional rigor. The situation also highlights a growing challenge for multiâday tours as climate conditions evolve across Europe.
