How He Transformed Jamaican Sprinting

Stephen Francis, the veteran Jamaican sprint coach, passed away on Saturday at the age of 64. The Kingston‑based MVP Track & Field Club had announced a week earlier that he was hospitalized, but his death was confirmed by club officials. “Stephen Francis changed the trajectory of Jamaican athletics for the better,” said MVP President Bruce James in a Sunday statement. James added that Francis proved Jamaican athletes could become world champions when coached locally and supported by local management.

Gold‑Medal Achievements Under His Guidance

Francis guided Shelly‑Ann Fraser‑Pryce to Olympic 100‑meter gold in 2008 and 2012, cementing her place among Jamaica’s sprinting icons. He also shaped Elaine Thompson‑Herah, coaxing her to claim both the 100‑meter and 200‑meter titles in 2016 and again in 2021. His mentorship produced Kishane Thompson, who captured Olympic 100‑meter silver in Paris, narrowly losing to Noah Lyles by five thousandths of a second. The coach’s touch also helped Asafa Powell set a string of world‑record marks.

From Finance to the Track

The former finance professional turned his focus to coaching, a decision that sparked a new era for Jamaican sprinting. Prime Minister Andrew Holness highlighted Francis’s bold career shift, noting it forged one of the greatest legacies in track and field. “That choice helped shape one of the greatest legacies in track and field and inspired countless athletes to believe in themselves and pursue excellence,” Holness posted. The coach was affectionately known to friends and supporters as “Franno,” a nickname that reflected his dedication and personable style.

Memorial Tributes from His Stars

Thompson‑Herah paid heartfelt homage on social media, writing, “Thanks for paving the way. The greatest to ever do it.” Her tribute underscored Francis’s lasting influence on the next generation of sprinters. The track community continues to remember a coach who not only forged world‑class athletes but also inspired countless young Jamaicans to dream big.

Stephen Francis’s impact on Jamaican athletics will endure long after his passing, and his story remains a testament to the power of dedication and vision in sport.
