BBC Alba to Cover Glasgow 2026 Games in Gaelic
New Broadcast Partner for Glasgow 2026
TNT Sports secured the rights to be the live UK broadcast partner for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, outbidding the BBC. The public broadcaster had provided free‑to‑air coverage since 1954 across 18 successive Games. BBC Alba will now be the sole BBC outlet where viewers can watch nightly live coverage and highlights. Details on broadcast times and programming are set to be released nearer the event.
The Gaelic‑language channel will also make its coverage available on BBC iPlayer, ensuring audiences across Scotland can follow the action. Phil Batty, chief executive of Glasgow 2026, called the partnership a “brilliant addition” that reflects the Games’ inclusive spirit.
Full Gaelic Coverage and Presenters
BBC Alba said it will provide Gaelic‑language Commonwealth Games coverage from the opening through to the closing ceremonies, showcasing the world’s finest athletes. Presenter Derek Murray will head the commentary team, supported by the channel’s existing Gaelic‑language staff. Margaret Mary Murray, head of BBC Gaelic Services, highlighted the historic opportunity for the language to be at the heart of a global sporting event.
Earlier this year the broadcaster aired eight live Serie A football matches featuring Italy‑based Scots, demonstrating its ability to deliver high‑profile sports content. The decision to air the Games in Gaelic aims to bring the thrills and magic moments of competition to audiences wherever they are.
Games Overview and Athlete Participation
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will run from 23 July to 2 August, featuring 10 sports plus six para‑sports, including 3×3 wheelchair basketball, swimming, artistic gymnastics, athletics, bowls, netball and track cycling. More than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations are expected to compete. Glasgow last hosted the event in 2014, when Usain Bolt famously struck a celebratory pose.
This edition marks a renewed focus on accessibility, with the entire programme available through Gaelic broadcasting to ensure every Scottish community can engage with the action.

Technical Broadcast Details and Availability
BBC Alba will announce precise broadcast times closer to 23 July, but fans can expect nightly live events and highlight programmes throughout the two‑week schedule. The channel’s Gaelic content will be streamed on BBC iPlayer, offering flexibility for viewers across the UK. Meanwhile, TNT Sports will deliver more than 600 hours of live coverage, with every event also available on HBO Max.
The shift from the BBC to TNT marks the first change in UK broadcast partnership since 2014. The BBC cited an inability to match TNT’s bid, while TNT, part of Warner Bros Discovery, is already known for UEFA Champions League and select Premier League fixtures. This new arrangement ensures that Gaelic‑speaking audiences still have a dedicated home for the Games on the BBC platform.
