Dominant Volleyball Power

The Essex girls volleyball squad posted its fifth straight undefeated season, finishing 17‑0 and dropping only five sets all year. Their 86‑match unbeaten streak sparked celebrations across the state, and they capped the run by sweeping BFA‑St. Albans in the championship match.

Soccer Crown for Burr & Burton

After years of near‑misses, Burr and Burton claimed the Division I boys soccer title with an overtime victory over two‑time defending champion Champlain Valley. The Bulldogs went 16‑0‑1, outscored opponents 65‑11, and became the first non‑Chittenden County program to win the D‑I crown in 25 years. The team also boasts four Division I college commits.

Field Hockey Dynasty

Rice field hockey rolled to a second consecutive perfect season, finishing 17‑0 and outscoring foes 90‑5. Four players earned Division I college commitments, and Bella Walsh (UVM commit) scored twice in the 4‑2 championship win over Champlain Valley.

Baseball Breakthrough

BFA‑St. Albans baseball erupted after a long drought, winning its first title since 2022 with a 3‑1 upset of Essex. The Comets finished 20‑1‑2, posted an 18‑game winning streak, and feature BFP girls athlete of the year Marah McGinn among their stars.

Wrestling Upset Ends Long Reign

Spaulding wrested the title from Mount Anthony, ending the Patriots’ 36‑year championship run at the Champlain Valley Union meet. The Crimson Tide captured their first crown since 1984, winning 12 of 14 weight classes before the finals. MAU’s streak remains a national record for wrestling and ranks sixth all‑time for consecutive titles across high school sports.

Basketball Miracle

Mount Mansfield surged to its first D‑I girls basketball championship, erasing a 22‑point deficit late in the third quarter and outscoring Rutland 24‑6 in the final period. Aly Dorman poured 34 points, sinking the game‑tying and winning shots to seal the victory for the Cougars (22‑1, 26‑point average margin).

Softball Perfection

BFA‑St. Albans softball defended its state title with a 2‑1 win over Colchester, extending a 35‑game winning streak. The dynamic duo of Megan Gonyeau and Irie Shedd anchored a perfect season, as the Comets outscored opponents 186‑22.

Perfect Baseball Season

Essex boys baseball completed a historic unbeaten run, going 17‑0 for the first perfect season in 19 years and only the third in at least five decades. The Hornets outscored opponents 116‑15, trailed in just four innings, and claimed the title with a 5‑0 win over Mount Anthony.

Lacrosse Revival

Rice girls lacrosse secured its first D‑I championship, defeating Burr and Burton 8‑7 after trailing at halftime. The Green Knights finished 17‑0, snapped a 13‑year title drought, and scored at least 11 goals in every game except the championship.

Tennis Dominance

Burlington tennis posted a flawless 15‑0 campaign, featuring the individual singles champion, singles runner‑up, and the doubles state champions. The Seahorses compiled a combined 97‑8 win‑loss record, capped by a 7‑0 team victory over Middlebury for their second back‑to‑back crown and third title in four seasons.

The Essex Hornets started their season with a near perfect game. They ended their championship season with a perfect record. The Hornets went 17-0 for D-I’s first unbeaten season in 19 years and just the third in at least 50 years following a 5-0 win over Mount Anthony in the title round. They outscored teams 116-15 and trailed in just four innings all spring.

Rice girls lacrosse faced some adversity in the D-I championship game trailing at halftime. The Green Knights (17-0) rallied playing shutdown defense in the second half to defeat Burr and Burton 8-7 to complete an undefeated season. It was Rice’s first lacrosse title as D-I team, snapping a 13-year championship drought. The only game Rice did not score at least 11 goals was in the state championship.

Burlington had the individual singles champion, the singles runner-up and the doubles state championship tandem. The Seahorses players also went a combined 97-8 over the duration of the season, capped by a 7-0 team victory over Middlebury in the title match to complete a perfect campaign (15-0), the second of back-to-back crowns and third title in four seasons.
