Cade Smith Earns 2026 All‑Star Nod

Smith Joins Elite All‑Star List

Cleveland’s relief ace, Cade Smith, has been voted into the 2026 MLB All‑Star Game, becoming one of three Guardians honored this summer. Fellow infield star Travis Bazzana and starting pitcher Parker Messick also earned spots, all selected by their peers through the player ballot. The announcement moves Smith from the Guardians’ bullpen to the All‑Star roster that will head to Philadelphia.

Smith’s elevation caps a rapid rise that began when he took over the ninth inning after Emmanuel Clase’s gambling scandal. The clubhouse’s confidence in Smith’s ability to close games remains high, with manager Stephen Vogt repeatedly praising his consistency and work ethic. This is the third All‑Star appearance for the right‑handed reliever, underlining his growing stature.

Elite Stats and Career Milestone

Statistical performance backs up the hype. By July 5, Smith led the league with 26 saves while posting a 2.97 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 39 ⅓ innings. He also ranks among the top four in the American League in fWAR (1.5), FIP (2.04) and K/9 rate (13.04). Since debuting in 2024, no other reliever has amassed more fWAR than Smith’s 6.9.

President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti praised Smith’s daily grind, calling him “the hardest worker we have.” The pitcher attributes his success to a rigorous routine he protects “with a death grip,” a mindset that has turned him into a reliable ninth‑inning option. Smith’s numbers illustrate why the Guardians consider him a cornerstone of their bullpen.

Guardians Pitching Factory Context

Cleveland has cultivated a reputation as one of baseball’s premier pitching labs, and Smith fits squarely into that tradition. His ascent mirrors that of past Guardians relievers who broke onto the big‑stage roster, showing the system’s ability to develop elite talent. Even catcher Austin Hedges has been vocal about Smith’s elite status since his rookie season.

The departure of Emmanuel Clase created an opening that Smith seized, turning a potential hole into a strength. Vogt’s confidence that Smith can handle the ninth inning “by accident” reflects the seamless integration of the pitcher into the club’s endgame plans. This continuity has helped the Guardians maintain a stable and productive bullpen depth.

What This Means for the Future

Smith’s All‑Star selection signals that Cleveland’s pitching pipeline remains productive and competitive at the highest level. With three starters and a closer now on the national roster, the Guardians are well‑represented and can draw additional attention to their player development model. Fans can expect continued reliance on Smith’s high‑leverage work as the season progresses.

As Smith enters what could be a defining stretch, the organization’s focus on individualized routines and relentless preparation suggests further statistical refinement. If the recent trajectory holds, Smith could become a staple of the Guardians’ postseason pitching staff, reinforcing the club’s identity as a reliable source of elite relievers.

Cade Smith stats

The numbers have followed to back up some lofty claims. Entering July 5, Smith led the league with 26 saves while posting a 2.97 ERA with 57 strikeouts in 39⅓ innings this season. He’s also the only American League reliever to rank in the top four in fWAR (1.5), FIP (2.04) and K/9 rate (13.04). And, since he entered the league in 2024, no reliever in the majors has more fWAR than his 6.9.

“Cade is so impressive in many ways,” Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said. “Really from the time he joined the club a couple of years ago, he’s been an instrumental part of our bullpen. And he puts in the work every single day to prepare to succeed, and I think we all get the benefit of seeing that play out on the field, with just how consistent he’s been as a pitcher and the way he handles those big moments.

“He is as hard of, if not the hardest, worker we have.”

Once Smith found something that worked as he climbed the ladder to the majors, he refused to let go. And so continues the Cleveland pitching factory, with Vogt forever relieved any time he gets to call on Smith to jog to the mound from the bullpen in the ninth inning (or, sometimes if there’s a high leverage situation, the eighth).

“I think this organization does a great job at emphasizing the importance of routines, and they also do a great job of individualizing them,” Smith said. “I know the things that are important to me, for me to keep my body ready to perform, keep my mind ready to perform. And I’ve got to cling onto that with a death grip, so to speak.”
