Celtics Send Jaylen Brown to 76ers for Paul George
Salary Cap Calculus
Boston’s front office concluded that retaining Jaylen Brown would severely limit its financial flexibility. Brown still has roughly $185 million left on his five‑year, $304 million contract signed in July 2023. Paired with Jayson Tatum’s remaining $190 million of a $314 million deal, the Celtics saw a combined load exceeding 70 % of the salary cap. Owner Bill Chisholm emphasized that no directive was given to keep the cap at a specific level, framing the move as a strategic win for the franchise. The decision reflected a broader league trend where managing cap space outweighs hoarding multiple high‑priced homegrown stars.
Acquiring Paul George
In exchange for Brown, Boston received six‑time All‑NBA wing Paul George and a package of draft picks. George will earn $54 million next season, joining Tatum’s $58 million to occupy about 70 % of the cap in 2026‑27. Stevens highlighted George’s ability to be a “carry” player while also delivering at the highest level on both ends of the floor. The trade also delivers two first‑round and two second‑round selections, providing future assets for rebuilding or additional moves. George’s injury history—only three seasons with 50+ games since 2019—adds a layer of risk to the acquisition.
Brown’s Emotional Departure
Before the deal, Stevens told Brown that any trade would feel like “a sad day for me personally,” acknowledging the emotional weight of the decision. Brown later expressed mixed feelings, stating on Twitch that he felt a lack of respect and that “there’s more to it.” Stevens countered that they had “several talks” and that he regretted any perception of poor communication. The forward also learned that Boston had previously included him in a failed Milwaukee deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Despite the acrimony, Stevens insisted the relationship could be repaired.
Tatum’s Silent Partner
The Brown trade also ends a nine‑year partnership with Jayson Tatum, who played alongside him in seven conference finals and two NBA Finals, culminating in the 2024 championship. Tatum posted an Instagram tribute, thanking Brown for “respect as a player and as a person.” Stevens confirmed Tatum was never consulted on the Brown decision, noting that the star forward “doesn’t need to feel that” way. The Celtics’ front office emphasized that Tatum’s input was not required for this particular roster move. The duo’s synergy, however, remains a cornerstone of Boston’s identity despite the roster shift.
What Lies Ahead for Boston
Stevens framed the trade as essential for maintaining competitiveness in a tougher cap environment. With George’s player option expiring after one season, the Celtics aim to retain flexibility for future free‑agency windows. The added draft capital could be leveraged to surround the core of Tatum and George with complementary talent. Owners and management hope the roster reshuffle positions the franchise for another title run without the financial strain of multiple megacontracts. The ultimate test will be whether the new makeup can sustain the winning culture established over the past two seasons.
