Fulham Appoint Alvaro Arbeloa as New Manager
New Leadership at Craven Cottage
Fulham have unveiled Alvaro Arbeloa as their next boss, handing the 43‑year‑old a three‑year contract to replace Marco Silva. The former interim Real Madrid commander moves to London after Silva agreed to join Benfica. Arbeloa described the move as “a real honour for me to be embarking on this new stage at Fulham FC, the oldest club in London.” He added that he feels a “great sense of responsibility” and thanked chairman Shahid Khan and vice‑chairman Tony Khan for their trust.
Why Khan Chose Arbeloa
Chairman Shahid Khan highlighted Arbeloa’s ambition and high‑level experience. “Alvaro is, by his own admission, very ambitious,” Khan said. He pointed out that Arbeloa has “spent quality time around the best players, clubs and methods in the game,” and praised his interest in the academy and desire to play attacking football. The endorsement was backed by strong references from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and the club’s new manager, José Mourinho.
Silva’s Sudden Exit
Marco Silva’s departure surprised the board after five successful years at Craven Cottage. Fulham’s vice‑chairman later revealed that Silva had “indicated he wanted to stay” but changed his mind. Despite receiving contract offers from Fulham, Silva opted to move to the Portuguese side as Mourinho’s replacement. The timing left a vacancy that Arbeloa quickly filled.
Links to Other Managers
During the search, former Tottenham and Brentford boss Thomas Frank was linked to the role. Meanwhile, ex‑Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna was considered too costly, with estimates placing his price at £8 million before salary and staff expenses.
Arbeloa’s Recent Track Record
Before his Fulham appointment, Arbeloa had been a youth coach in Madrid. He stepped up as interim manager of Real Madrid in January after Xabi Alonso’s departure. Arbeloa guided the team through the final 28 games of the season, securing a La Liga second‑place finish and a quarter‑final run in the Champions League before being knocked out by Bayern Munich.
Potential New Faces for the Squad
Arbeloa is eager to bring his own recruiting team, including attacking midfielder Franco Mastantuono, full‑back Fran Garcia and forward Gonzalo Garcia. Those additions could reshape Fulham’s attacking options ahead of the next Premier League campaign.
The appointment marks a new chapter for Fulham as they look to build on recent progress and aim for higher targets in the league.
