Breanna Stewart Honored as Top College Player by AP

AP Honors Stewart Before Liberty Game

Breanna Stewart received a special recognition from the Associated Press on Tuesday night before the New York Liberty faced the Dallas Wings. The honor cited her status as one of the greatest women’s college basketball players during the Top 25 poll era. The award came as part of the AP’s celebration of the poll’s 50th anniversary last season. A 13‑member panel voted Stewart and Cheryl Miller as the top college players of the past five decades.

50 Years of the Women’s Basketball Poll

The AP launched its women’s basketball poll 50 years ago, marking a milestone that was commemorated last season. The poll has tracked the evolution of the game and produced a legacy of standout athletes. Over the decades, the panel has refined its criteria to reflect both on‑court performance and cultural impact. This anniversary honor placed Stewart among the pantheon of elite college players.

Four Championships and Final Four MVP

Stewart’s college career at UConn featured four consecutive national championships. She was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four in each of those titles. AP Global Sports Editor Josh Hoffner presented her trophy on the center court just minutes before the Liberty’s tipoff. The moment highlighted her dominance and lasting influence in women’s basketball.

Cheryl Miller Also Recognized

Cheryl Miller accepted her own trophy at the Final Four in Phoenix last April. Her award was presented during “The AP Top 25 Fan Poll Experience,” held at Arizona State’s First Amendment Forum in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. Stewart was unable to attend that ceremony, missing the chance to share the stage with Miller. Both players now stand as the top selections in the poll’s 50‑year history.
