James Wood Edges Toward Leadoff HR Record
James Wood is making a serious run at the MLB leadoff home‑run milestone, logging his eighth round‑trip shot of the season. The Nationals outfielder first showed his punch early on Saturday, blasting the very first pitch he saw. On Tuesday night at Nationals Park, he waited for a 83‑mph cutter from Astros starter Tatsuya Imai and sent it over the right‑field fence.
With eight leadoff homers already, Wood is just one shy of Alfonso Soriano’s franchise high of nine set in 2006. He also trails Kyle Schwarber’s league‑wide record of 15, a mark Schwarber posted with the Phillies in 2024. If Wood adds a couple more, he’ll not only top Soriano’s mark but also move into striking distance of Schwarber’s single‑season benchmark.
Wood’s Leadoff HR Standings for Washington
Alfonso Soriano, 9 leadoff homers, 2006
James Wood, 8 leadoff homers, through Tuesday
Kyle Schwarber, 7 leadoff homers, 2021
Beyond the leadoff blast club, Wood is barreling toward a rare combined stat line. He is on pace to become the fourth player in MLB history—under age 23—to notch 40 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a single campaign. That resume already earns him a spot atop the league in runs scored.
Wood entered Tuesday with 81 runs, a full 19 more than runner‑up Yordan Alvarez of Houston. His July surge includes ten runs over six games, five of them coming against the Astros in the past two contests. The 23‑year‑old also joins Ted Williams (1940) and Mike Trout (2012) as the only players since 1900 to lead the league by at least 16 runs after July 5 while still 24 or younger.
The Nationals fell 6‑3 to the visiting Astros on Tuesday, but Wood’s two runs highlighted his offensive impact. His ability to score in bunches, combine power with speed, and now crush leadoff pitches makes him a cornerstone of Washington’s lineup. If the current pace holds, Wood could rewrite both Nationals and MLB leadoff home‑run histories before the season ends.
