5-Time NCAA Champion Habtom Samuel Quits UNM for Pro Career

Habtom Samuel Announces Pro Transition from UNM

Why Samuel Made the Move

New Mexico’s star junior distance runner, Habtom Samuel, announced on Tuesday that he will leave college after his final semester to pursue a professional career. The five‑time NCAA champion said his education remains a priority while he completes his coursework at the University. In an Instagram post he thanked family, coaches, teammates and the university for their support throughout his time as a Lobo. Although he is turning pro immediately, Samuel has not yet signed with a new brand, leaving his market value wide open.

Samuel’s Record‑Breaking Season

This past season Samuel captured the NCAA individual cross country title and added national championships in the indoor 5,000 m, the outdoor 5,000 m and the outdoor 10,000 m. He also set a new NCAA record in the outdoor 5,000 m, clocking 13:03.47, and helped UNM win its first outdoor track title since 2019. Earlier in his college career he finished second in the NCAA cross country meet as a freshman and repeated as a runner‑up in indoor and outdoor 5,000 m and 10,000 m as a sophomore. No other athlete in UNM history has collected more national championships than Samuel.

Professional Prospects and Market Interest

UNM head track coach Darren Gauson said he spoke with Samuel extensively about the decision and learned of his plans only on Tuesday. Gauson believes Samuel’s dominance has made him a top prospect, noting that brands are eager to sign an athlete who already competes well against professionals. In May Samuel ran the world‑leading 5,000 m against a field that included former Olympians at the Sound Running L.A. Track Festival. His existing NIL agreement with HOKA will likely be renewed, but other companies are expected to show strong interest as well.

Samuel’s Legacy at New Mexico

The Eritrea native joined UNM in 2023 after a distinguished youth career representing his home country and quickly became a cornerstone of the program. His decision to turn pro while finishing his degree reflects both his academic ambition and his desire to test himself on the world stage. Coach Gauson praised Samuel for evolving into a complete athlete who can win in any event he chooses. The move marks the end of a remarkable college run that set new benchmarks for Lobo distance running.
