D-backs Fall to Padres, Momentum Snuffed Out
Pitching Setback with Zac Gallen
Zac Gallen was thrust into a leadership role once again, but his night quickly unraveled. He surrendered four runs in the opening frame, then managed to keep the Padres to just that total for the next five innings. While he survived six innings with four runs allowed, the early blow effectively ended any chance of building momentum. The broadcast tried to spin it as an improvement, yet the damage was already done.
Offensive Slump Hits Hard
The Dâbacks offense produced virtually nothing after the first inning. Pavin Smith, still receiving starts despite a prolonged slump, went 0âforâ3. Corbin Carroll continues to wrestle with a hole in his swing that pitchers have exploited lately. After loading the bases early, the team only mustered three hits for the remainder of the game, all singles.
Arenadoâs Costly Double Plays
Nolan Arenado contributed two of the three inningâending double plays that stifled scoring chances. Following a Marte double and a loadedâbase situation, Arenado lined into a double play to close the frame. These defensive lapses proved pivotal, especially after the Padres starter, Marquez, crossed the 30âpitch threshold in the first inning. The offense never recovered, managing just three hits after that disastrous start.
Preparing for Tomorrowâs Matchup
Aimed at returning to .500, Arizona will turn to rookie rightâhander Jose Cabrera against the Padresâ Michael King. Both clubs know the upcoming games are critical, and the Dâbacks cannot afford to hand another contest away. Quickly reversing the current slide will be essential if the team hopes to become serious contenders later in the season.
