Kevon Looney Signs With Lakers, Ending Warriors Tenure

Kevon Looney Signs One-Year Deal with Lakers

A New Wave of Warriors Moves

Quinten Post formalized his free‑agency move by signing an offer sheet with the Memphis Grizzlies the day before Looney’s deal was announced. The two former Golden State Warriors front‑court players are reshaping their careers on opposite coasts. Both moves highlight the fluidity of roster construction as the NBA offseason unfolds.

Looney’s tenure with the New Orleans Pelicans ended after a single season, a stretch that saw him average 2.8 points on 41.7% field‑goal shooting, 5.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists across 21 games. A left‑knee sprain during preseason limited his playing time and likely influenced his decision to seek a fresh start. The veteran center is now headed back to California, where the Lakers have secured his services.

Looney spent a decade with the Warriors, emerging as a role player who contributed to three championship runs. While with Golden State he posted averages of roughly five points on 57.7% shooting and 5.7 rebounds per contest. Those years defined his ability to provide solid interior presence without demanding the ball consistently.

Los Angeles will pair Looney with newly acquired center Walker Kessler, forming a frontcourt that can flex between size and skill under Luka Doncic’s playmaking. The addition gives the Lakers depth in the paint and a potential complement to their star point guard’s pick‑and‑roll options. Coach Darvin Ham now has more options to rotate lineups and manage minutes.

Financial terms of Looney’s contract are a one‑year, $3.9 million deal, a figure that reflects his veteran stature while keeping cap flexibility for the franchise. The signing came via ESPN’s Shams Charania, confirming the longstanding rumor that the center was headed West. This move positions the Lakers to bolster their frontcourt depth as they prepare for the upcoming season.
